Anyone know what was going on at the intersection of Centre St. and South Orange Ave. this morning around 8:30? It looked like the police had some sort of roadblock set up as people were making the right turn from Centre onto SO Ave., and people were getting ticketed left and right. (Thankfully, I was not one of them!)

"click it or ticket" and yes - for seatbelt violations. This is not just in S. Orange, some kind of annual push to make sure people use seatbelts.

Why don't they ever conduct a sweep for the cars (mostly SUVs, it seems to me) that roar down Prospect during school hours, blowing through crosswalks? Parents and small children wait nervously for an opening, then dive across to the other side in hopes of surviving. I've never seen anything quite like the way many Maplewood adults drive around children.

Amen to what Ligeti says. Pull 'em over and ticket 'em with lots of points. And it's more than SUV's frankly.

The village council has been approached and has no interest in traffic calming on Prospect. It will take a death (there has already been one in eight years. Decause the victim was purportedly developmentally disabled or mentally ill, it apparently did not count.) It is not just Prospect, it is any of the combination of streets that link Springfield Avenue and South Orange Avenue. I was almost run down on Saturday as a woman in a white jeep decided to run through us as we crossed during the house tour. Good thing it was me and I am relatively fast, because it could have been any number of seniors who took the tour.

"Traffic calming" What a euphamism!

Call a spade what it is. Traffic obstruction.

if I have a gate on my window to keep out a burglar, is that "entry obstruction?" it's not an "obstruction" if it is simply to keep people from breaking the law.

Yes, calming is a bizarre euphamism. But obstruction is just as ridiculous.

Why don't you contact the police department's traffic unit (if they even have one) or the police administration and ask them to do some enforcement.

They won't target what they don't see as a problem...residents see the problem all day...a police officer might be on your street for only a few minutes of their work day and not really see what a problem the traffic concerns are...sort of like my noise concerns and other residents quality of life issues.

there is a difference between just whining about an issue and then bringing it to someone's attention...after you do that and you have no results...then you know your in South Orange.

There's a 'No Turn On Red' sign at that intersection; isn't there? Maybe that's why tickets were given? I'll check in the morning.

O&G,
Note "the village council has been approached" in my post. The traffic bureau has reacted several times in the last five years. Enforcement has been deployed, and the speed monitor put in place. This has not led to any permanent change. Stop signs, a light, or some other form of obstruction is called for. I am beyond whining, I am now praying for the pedestrians and the bicyclists, and the schoolchildren.
