While driving south on Valley St. today about 1PM, I passed the fenced-in parking lot next to the storage warehouse on the west side of the street between Lackawana and Roland, and saw what appeared to be a large fawn standing stock still, looking out at the street. Fifteen minutes later, on my return trip, I noted that it was still there.

Although I had to hurry home and couldn't stop to investigate further, my heart went out to the poor creature, obviously terrified and unable to decide what to do...

I imagined that it had somehow wandered into the village (crossing the tracks???) from the Reservation during the night, perhaps having been separated from its family, and as the day dawned found itself lost in a strange cage, without a clue what do do or where to go.

I didn't call Animal Control, though I know I should have. This post is in part a confession. Although I can't imagine how, I hope the little guy's OK...

-s.

they make it that far down quite often, in fact a friend of mine had one going down springfield ave in Irvington by their police dept !!!! ........he was a bit off. BTW animal control wouldn't do anything for the dear if you had called today, as long as it wasn't injured or a danger to the public there's not much he could do.

I'd say a deer on the streets, that lost and far from the reservation, is a danger to the public.

Maybe it was looking for Village Hall to see if it could get an update on the Village's long overdue plan for managing its invasive, destructive deer problem.

Two Sense;

You have it backwards he was going to Village Hall to try and put a stop to the invasive, destructive people problem.

Tom - the animal control officer trying to coax the deer back up would actually create more of a hazard, it'll freak out that there's someone/ a car following it and will be more likely to dart off towards moving cars or people. They eventually find their way back up to the res.

A couple of years ago we had a fawn take up residence in our back yard for a couple of days. It got separated from its mother. I think when this happens the instinct is to stay put and hope Mommy finds them. In our case that appears to have been what happened as the deer was gone on the third day.

Three or four years ago there were posts that a small herd of deer were living at Winchester Garden on Elmwood near Boyden and in the large back yards on the other side of Elmwood. I have no idea if they are still there or not.

We saw one on Saturday afternoon roaming around Richmond Ave through the properties. My son and I watched it roam. No one was around and their was a sort of stillness in the neighborhood. The fawn just wandered through the yards and dashed off.

Maybe if a few more deer would work there way down to village hall, the trustees will finally get up the courage to do something about the horrendous deer problem which is devasting the landscaping and foiliage throught the village. I, for one, will be directing them to the landscaping designed by Scerbo in the heart of the village. Why should they not feast on those plantings much as they have ruined much of what I have planted?

jayjay: The problem with the deer remains with the county and hardly has anything to do with the "courage" of the trustees. We have agreed as a board to go along with whatever the county and the majority of towns surrounding the reservation agree to do. We have been willing to contribute to the cost (based on a per capita and sharing with the county). We have met with the county and a representative from the county has come to trustee meetings (in public).
Since the deer problem stems from the reservation, the county must take the lead in any coordinated effort to deal with this issue. It would seem that the county does not want to put up one cent and keeps claiming that they can't get a concensus on what to do (shooting the deer, trap and transfer, etc) so instead they do nothing.
Perhaps you would like to gather a petition and deliver to the county (or to me and I will send on with a letter to our county executive).

Mark - Would it be possible for SO to set-up a meeting with the other affected municipalities. It seems that there has been a feeling expressed that if the county would pay one-half the costs of a trap and transfer program, the municipalties might be willing to pick up the other half.

If all the municipalities agree, then this consensus approach can be presented to the county.

As you've stated, the county keeps throwing the ball back to the towns. Let the towns get together and then approach the county.

Spitz: I will request that we do this again. This was done several years ago and basically the county stated they would not pay one penny towards the cost.

Thanks. Maybe this time the towns can insist. As you know, even the Audubon Society has said we're at "ground zero" as far as deforestation is concerned. The county should be advised that the reservation is becoming deforested, and the towns are willing to share one-half of the costs.

Deer meat is the best. Tastes like beef but more tender.
