Just the Aunt, I would love to come watch their game! Give me a time and place and I'll bring some of students out there to cheer them on! I can't wait to find out who your mom is, I really enjoyed all the people at OLV and the Youth Center. I got a PL recently from someone on MOL who works with the girls softball league who wanted some SHU support and so I contacted the coaches and they thought it was great. So I know the women's softball team will be volunteering with the girls league and I would really like to see something similar with the men's basketball team. Heck, I may even bring out the ole' basketball shoes... lol.

JTA - yes I am a proud 13 year resident of South Orange. I am sorry that you dont understand what I was telling you. If your nephews are truly interested in basketball and have the skills that you say they do then believe me you dont want to change anything. I am not by any means making light of or condoning poor behaviour from any person who speaks to you in that way however I was trying to explain their point of view. Public property should be open to all that want to use it and not be an exclusive South Orange club. The village can place restrictions on the hours of use to make sure that there is no late night noise. It is my hope that the actual courts have more then just the full court - meaning a separate half court area, and that the rims are breakaway to prevent bending and that the backboards are sturdy. There are many courts in the area and basketball players like variety so generally they play where there are other like skilled players. That is how it is and should be. Basketball is played until exhaustion. Until then there is no point in stopping. Just because a game is over does not mean that the court is free for use. You may never get to understand this but I bet in 2 or 3 years your nephews will be able to explain it to you and they will be very pleased if you did not get your way at this time. As far as your 'seeing' younger children on the courts, you have to be there at the time some adult brings them there. I dont think you let your nephews out on their own do you? Given the miserable condition of the Baird courts the past few years I am surprised that anyone was using the courts at all.

Points 2 & 3 sounds reasonable. However, if a basketball program is created there for the summer for example, be aware that "non-residence" are welcomed. If there are rules for use, then all should abide by them. In avoiding the "hogging" of the courts, perhaps the SO rec. could have a sign-up sheet outside for usage and time allotment set. |

...courts were empty again yesterday evening when I drove by. Just FYI. I hate to let the facts get in the way of a good argument, but again, I just don't believe there is a "problem" of out-of-towners keeping locals from using the courts. As for the foul language: I don't see what that has to do with residency. Anyone who doubts that should sit next to the Seton Hall kids on the morning train -- or next to any teenager from the past 100 years, for that matter. |

cmontyburns, As for the foul language... let's be fair... I don't think SHU students and teens are the only ones with the potty mouth syndrome. My grandmother carried a bar of soap with her everywhere... I'm sure her generation of MOL readers can appreciate what they "use to do" in the past, lol. |

One clarification: I meant the Seton Hall PREP kids on the morning train. High School students. You know, evildoers. SHU students are likely far less potty mouthed than I am.

Just the Aunt, Spoke with some of our basketball players today. They're set to play! Said if anyone tries to take the court from your nephews - they'll handle them (oh lord...) PL me when they'd like to play and I'll grab our boys. -Sheena |

The court was empty because it is not complete. Wait 'til it is. Noise, foul language, graffiti, and residents too intimidated to even approach the court. What does that tell you? Out-of-town guests causing trouble. I can't wait. |

Parrot Head - It tells me that you are biased and that you are against any basketball courts being constructed in the area. I fully and totally disagree with you about residents being afraid to visit the courts. About grafitti being a basketball issue as well. You are trying to pull a fast one here by raising fear into the equation. I would say for you to speak for yourself. If you are scared say so but dont put it on some unknown resident. I agree that there is noise on the basketball court - balls bouncing, people shouting and having a good time. - Right behind the train tracks.

Bets: Just went back and saw the question. I was all in favor of having a basketball court by the pool. I still think it is a good location. The idea had been proposed by a resident about 5 years ago. I bought it up at a trustee meeting. One resident and one trustee were absolutely against it. The resident (who is a realtor) even went so far as to point her finger at me at a trustee meeting and told me what horrible it was for us to even consider the suggestion. It got lost at the committee level for lack of support. I will glady ask the Rec. committee to reconsider the idea.

I think the rec. committee would be in favor of more than less. In addition, I've always thought the children's playground area should be directly accessible from the pool area, but it's not. Some issue with respect to securing entry into the pool area prevents this from happening. The ultimate decision is left to the BoT. The need is then to place it on the capital budget request and wait ten years for completion. (Oh, I forgot, Steglitz is no longer on the board). |

Allowing direct access to the pool from the playground would prohibit those without a badge from using the playground. Should it only be accessible to residents of South Orange? Or should we spend more more and hire a badge checker for the pool/playground entrance? |

Does anyone know WHO ACCEPTED this money on our behalf? How much money was it? Can we somehow give it back to keep the courts for our own residents? Hey, if a South Orange Resident wants to take the responsibility of the guests they bring, fine otherwise the courts should have been for south orange residents only. Thanks a lot to whoever accepted this money without the input of the community. Think I'll resd the rest of this thread tomorrow as it's late... |

LL I think that that's a great idea! During the time the pool is open, the playground can be accessed through the pool area only. When the pool is closed, the ouuter gate of the playground area can be left open. |

So, Just the Aunt, you'd rather have the courts sit idle than let out-of-towners (like people from Maplewood) use them?

cmonty- Yes. But considering Maplewood and South Orange share a school system, baseball program, camps, Maplewood might be a different story. I think Maplewood and South Orange should merge their rec programs, with the exception of the pools. There is talk on another thread about the towns considering merging some services. I think the rec programs should be one of them! |
