I was really upset to hear that someone was mugged at knife or gun point on Church Street (as written in the police blotter in the News Record). I don't feel like I see many police officers around town, especially on some of the popular walking routes away from the station. Is there any way that we could make South Orange a safer town?

WHAT??? I live on Church Street but will never waste my hard-earned money on that rag again. Can you provide details? I can't even bring myself to read their online edition, I'm so disgusted.

Or move to Short Hills, where the streets are paved in gold and no one ever gets mugged, ever.

On May 19 at 10:15 p.m., a male victim was stopped on Church Street by a black man wearing a white hat holding a small handgun. The victim reported that the unknown male demanded money and the victim handed over $60 to $70 in cash. The victim said he recognized the man from a party he attended but does not know him personally.

So I guess unless the mugger knows you, you should be safe.

I am so conflicted right now.

Thanks, Nancy. I'll probably take the SOPL up on the free read in the future.

And thanks for the info, Brett (I hope you're taking note of how often I start a sentence with "and"). SO Ref - when are you coming to a FTF? People want to meet you.

No, I met Brett. Didn't see "the ring" though. It's SORefugee that Buzzsaw demonstrated some interest in meeting.

SOrefugee, no worries, just curious to meet because of your great style. I don't know when the next one is. Dave?

I'm trying to make it a habit to attend the BOT meetings (at least the first hour - as I have a usual Monday night affair I also attend), so maybe I'll see you there (except this Monday, of course). I'd love to meet more MOLers as I've only met Jamie Ross and others at H2TA.

Mugging...is that a polite way of saying "armed robbery?"

I wish they would have more police walking the street of South Orange. I feel very strongly with more cops on the streets it will help to deter crime. I feel when people see cops they are less likely to commit crimes.

You're right Debra, but the SOPD doesn't really have the manpower to put guys on walking posts every day. So when they DO put officers on the street there's one less guy that's able to respond to someone's house across town or to go after the guys in the stolen car grabbing your headlights
It's a conundrum of sorts, the answer.................more cops

...more cops indeed.

Doesn't more cops mean more money? Doesn't the money for the cops' salaries come from our taxes? Aren't we complaining that our taxes are too high? Then how the h-ll you come with such bight ideas?

Let's face it. Our cops do an excellent job but we need more man/womanpower which we cannot afford. So why are we complaining?

Now if we didn't spend 14 million dollars for an Arts Center - the wet dream of our president Bill Calabrese and his BoT - perhaps we could have safer streets. But, hey, we elected him four (4) times over, for four (4) years each time, for a total of sixteen (16) years. So what are we complaining about?

Com'on South Orange. Wake up and smell the roses.
