Tonight Kristen along with myself and my friend Jayson were driving home from the city and attempted to chase a dog away from an intersection on Springfield Ave at like 11pm.

There was a lot of traffic and we didn't want the dog to be hit or for there to be a car accident as a result of the dog. Kristen tried to contact Animal Control but to no avail so I called 911. I know it sounds drastic, but dogs are man's best friend... (people's best friend to be politically correct).

Anyhow, 1st attempt and the operator told me an officer was on the way. 30 minutes later (by that time Jayson was worn out from chasing the dog into the residential area on Rynda Rd (sp?)) we called again and were told that unless the dog is posing a threat to someone, cops can't do anything about it and nor do they have a place to keep the dog even if they caught him.

Now this dog was sooo scared and so cute and it was terrible that we had to leave it but there was no way to catch him and bring him to safety (my high heels didn't help the situation).

So, do any of you know what to do in a situation with stray dogs in the middle of the night? There has to be someone we can call (I hope)....

Sheena-
Its a good question, for which I have no good answer. I had what appeared to be a rabid racoon in my yard. It was out and about in the middle of the day (which I think means it is sick, since they are usually nocturnal). I called the police who told me that the animal control person was not around, but that they would leave a message for him. Later that they (hours later), the police called back, hhaving been told by the animal control guy that I should just leave it alone! I am not sure how that is a solution, but then I wonder what is the role of the animal control guy!!!

Why do some people have to be so obnoxious?

Jayjay-
I'm wondering who's responsible when after calling about a possible rabbied animal and being blown off it bites someone?

Sheena, was the dog a small, white Westie? There is a post in the Please Help section about such a lost dog. If the description fits I am sure the owner whould appreciate a phone call.

When I was in college my friends and I were heading out for the night around 10 or 11pm and the cutest little puppy was running around my campus totally lost, but friendly, and definitely very very young. We actually let him into the car and took him to the police station across the street. They said they hadn't gotten a call about a missing dog yet, but would keep him at the station over night then turn him over to the pound until someone claimed him.

I don't necessarily suggest you let stray dogs into your car (it wasn't my car), I'm quite aware of the risks, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Also - I'm sure not many dogs would happily jump into a strange car.

Sheena in a few weeks hopefully the animal shelter will be open and I think they will have a number to call for such a incident. If not then once you catch the dog you can drop it off at the shelter.

I don't think the police have animal control training other then putting down a rabid animal in an emergency.

I wouldn't use 911 either to report a loose dog...there is other things going on the police need to deal with other then animal complaints. Maybe the towns can enlist some volunteers to get animal welfare training for nights and weekends when it isn't feasible to pay the dog warden OT?

Bob K, no he was a bigger dog. He looked like this but with black and tan fur.

I suppose it's not as big of a deal if the dog was just chillin' in a neighborhood but when stray dogs are in high traffic areas, it definitely worries me.

Antonia,

The JAC shelter is located on Walton Avenue in South Orange and serves both towns. It is on the same road you'd take to reach Public Works and the town yard. I'm delighted it's open and will be by to sign up for volunteer dog walking/cat petting/bird (what do you do with birds?).

bets-
I sent an email offering to help with taking pictures for the website and offering my limited knowledge in maintaing the website. I would love to help play with the kitties; but it would break my heart knowing some of them might never be adopted.

I wanted to adopt an 'older' four legged friend when we got Miracle back in Dec 03; but was talked out of it. I was told 'you want a kitten. You don't know what kind of personality an older kittie has. With a kitten you can 'old' their personality.

Someone should tell that to the four legged beast! She does not like me! Won't purr for me, bites me. Yet, she purrs for my sister, sleeps on HER bed! Blah! Maybe someone should remind her who buys her food and cleans her litter box! LOL

I wouldn't trade her for the world though I do wonder what it would have been like if I adopted an older kittie like I wanted!

Here's something funny! Miracle is afraid of the boy's bunnies!

A friends dog got sprayed by a skunk one evening and after his master yelled at him ran away. Officer Roberts I believe (now Sergeant?) again showed her great bravery by loading him in her cruiser and taking him to one of the local animal hospitals where apparently the MPD has access and a key. He spent the rest of the night in doggy jail and I assume the Vet and his staff weren't happy with the smell when they showed up the next morning.

However, (insert drum roll...) this is my dog...

A dog by your own heart I see!

And by the way, since I haven't talked to you forever, PA training for me starts next week. We'll be in NY at a camp for a bit, and then back to school. I hear orientation time is insane and crazy, but let me know if you need me for anything... I have a weekend off. See you in a bit!

I believe a stray dog in traffic is an issue for humans. Although it wasn't an emergency for any humans at the time, it could have been when a human in a car hits someone or something.
We got the dog into a residential area as opposed to Springfield. If you're familiar with that road, there are plenty of people who speed, not to mention those who ignore stop signs, red lights, pedestrians and any other car for that matter. Having a dog running around the road would not have made anything better.
I'm glad we prevented a possible problem, rather than just sitting back and letting it happen.

JAC Shelter has the sweetest dog that was picked up by animal control in Meadowland Park, South Orange on Saturday. It is an all black, medium hair, herding dog look, with a brown bandana on. It had a leather collar on but no tags,no microchip. This animal is someone's pet because it is well cared for.

Our shelter does't have the computer set up for internet yet, so that is why I am posting this here. We will hopefully be posting pictures of the animals that animal control brings in so residents can look at them to see if it is their loved one.

We are a no kill shelter, so this dog will get a good home but I would love to see it find its owner. I have been searching the town for posters, asking groomers, etc but to no avail.

If anyone can help find the owner please contact JAC at 973-763-7322 or JAConline.org. We are obligated to hold an animal for 7 days then we can adopt it out. Some family has to be missing this charmer.

Maybe MOL, as a community service, can have a link to our site of strays that are brought in.

Sheena, we have a dog just like yours in our shelter. She would love to be held by you.

I don't think so but we do have a poster of the dog hanging in the shelter. I try not to get involved with the animals directly because I would adopt them all. I do most of the paper pushing. Good luck! If you go to www.petfinder.com and put in all your info on the site for lost dogs, they will post it for you free. I would also search all the shelters on this site in the state where the dog was lost and see if he is up for adoption. I know a person who found their dog that way. After the holding period most shelters try to adopt out. Petfinder is a God sent to the rescue and shelter organizations. They offer their services free of charge. They are truly the Angels of all our groups.

You should also contact the White Westie Rescue group, which you can find on petfinder.

When the shelter is fully operational, we will have many programs, one instructing people how to look for their lost pet. I would also call all the Vets in the area, groomers, pet stores. The best advice to people is microchip your animal. It is safe and most shelters now scan as soon as the animal brought in.

We also post pictures of our dogs and cats that are up for adoption www.jaconline.org, but with the moving in I do not think we have all the pictures posted yet. The hours of operation are also posted on that site.

Took a trip to the JAC Shelter today... wonderful place! The building is beautiful... the inside is very aesthetically pleasing... and the smell wasn't bad at all.

Spoke with Mary (seemed very nice) and I'm excited about what she along with the other workers are doing for the animals.

So everyone goooooo visit! And in the quarantine section there are 4 itty bitty teeny weenie kittens... like the size of the palm of your hand... (sigh) way to cute. They all 4 move to the back left hand corner of the cage... I suppose they're "sticking together" or something, lol.

Go volunteer if you have some time. Yes, yes... I will be letting our students know to volunteer as well.

So I’m driving home from work today and I purposely head toward the meadowlands park to see if Bert is going to poke his head out. There are about 10 different ways for me to head home so I figure to try to help a little by keeping my eyes peeled. I’m cruising down Gregory and there on the side of the road is a red retriever of some type, just meandering down the road.
I pull over, leaving my car about ˝ way in the street but it was the best I could do. The dog hangs a left and starts to head up another street. I follow him for a little and grab him at the corner.
*** Note: I grew up on a farm and have worked 2 summers as a dog catcher
He had three tags on his collar and was pretty friendly. Another guy coming down a side street stopped and asked if he was mine. I told him I just saw this guy meandering down the street and figured I’d stop. We called the number on the ”Locator tag” and they said the owner would call us right back. They didn’t, but the Locator tag people called back and gave us the address. We walked about two and ˝ blocks to return the dog. We got to the house and there was another dog running around in the front yard (ON GREGORY). The lady said “Oh yea Charlie likes to go visiting”. So we let go of the dog and walked back to our cars.

This poor dog will be hit by a car by the end of the summer.

Brett,

That's really sad to hear. It's also hella frustrating...

Most dog owners consider their dogs a part of the family... obviously this is not the case if the owner let's the dog wander through traffic...

I've stopped twice in the past year to pick up stray dogs running along Wyoming.

#1: Called number on tag, got owner. She said: Oh, he runs off all the time, I'll be right there. She pulled up in her minivan, talking on the cell phone -- nodded at me WITHOUT EVEN GETTING OFF THE PHONE, took the dog by the collar and got back in the minivan. Didn't even say thank you.

#2: Sweet, sweet dog. Sat with him on the back deck while he ate dog biscuits (my own dog was soooo jealous) & I tried calling the owner. Her line was constantly busy, so I finally called the operator to break in. Operator comes back on the line, says owner will be off the phone in a second.

I call back -- still busy.

I call back four more times -- still busy.

Finally the owner picks up the phone. "Oh," she says, "I was on the other line."

"Umm," I said, "your dog ran away. i've got him here." (Mind you the dog had a fancy wyoming avenue address on his tag. So I'm making an arrogant assumption about the leisure classes. So sue me.)

She drives over about twenty minutes later. "Oh, I keep meaning to fix that gate!" she says, leading him away. Again, not even a thank you.

I hope these ladies keep better track of their kids than they do of their dogs....

Great News. The Westie was reunited with its owner. Maplewood animal control brought the dog into the JAC shelter remembering the poster and Bert was reunited with his family.

I wish all stories were as happy as this one. I would like to find the owner of the little black dog with the brown bandana. He is someone's pet. Please if you find a poster or hear about this lost dog contact the shelter or the owner. He is soooo adoptable that I am sure we will be placing him in a home soon. We are still trying to hold off becuase he does belong to someone.

South Orange and Maplewood (the Maplewood police played a big role) should designate June 21 as Bert Day.
