Just wanted to give you guys a heads up on something, this may be common knowledge for most but in the event someone doesn't know... here goes...

One of my friends recently had his back windshield smashed. At first he thought someone broke into his car but when the police came to look at it and found all the glass was on the outside, they determined that the heat had caused the windshield to erupt.

Just a note to everyone to make sure to keep their windows slightly cracked because the heat has gotten pretty high up there.

You couldn't pay me to keep the windows cracked in this area. I'd rather take my chances having my window explode then come back to an empty parking space. Probably a great idea if you live somewhere other than on the border of Newark.

Someone stole our car while all of the windows were rolled up. And no, they didn't break the glass.

Do you KNOW the person, or is it a f-o-a-f?

Does seem strange. I grew up in AZ where the heat would get up to 120 degrees or hotter sometimes. Never heard of that happening.

Yeah, it's one of my best friends on SGA, lol.

I don't pass along tales. However, I'm kind of interested in seeing it. I'll get my digital camera and take a picture of it tomorrow if I can.

He was pretty upset at the whole situation, it would be rather random to make it up. I left my windows slightly cracked today, lol.

You can leave the window cracked just and it can still be closed...just roll it down till the seal is broken and it releases the pressure from building...the car's window will still be up and doesn't need to be cracked more then a 1/16th of an inch.

I have heard of this wivestale...but really have never heard of a window actually braking other then ones that were already cracked and continued to break over the extreme temp. change.

What kind of car is airtight? Colleen, what model car does your friend have? And do you think Maplewood might get as hot as South Orange?

This happened to us a couple of years ago--in Maplewood. We hadn't been using the car much, so the pressure could have been building up over a few days. The car is a Subaru Impreza, and it was the back window that broke. It had to be special-ordered, and the first one that came wasn't the right size. It took a while to get it fixed, when all was said and done.

What police told your friend that? Air presure in a car's cabin will not make a window break, there are plenty of places for expanding gas/air to go.

I *leased a '99 Red Volks Beetle, and had serious window issues. The mechanism that held the window in place was not designed for heat levels above whatever, the piece broke, and the window did not go up/down. The first time it happened, the car was still in warranty (driver's side). When the same thing happened to the passenger side window (two months out of warranty??), my partner at the time dealt with it (VW wanted me to pay full freight for repair). Eventually, a recall on VW windows was issued, but I'd moved on.

*The 1st lease my credit union ever did. Done very badly. Ask me about it if you want to hear a funny.

Sheena is right on this one... http://www.klas-tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=584807&nav=168h6Bcg (Tips for new Los Vegas residents) #1, leave window cracked to prevent this. Also, http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem00/chem00506.htm (a more reliable source for you doubters) the last response to the question mentions this situation.

Holmes, she isn't exactly right. It's not the gas inside the car that makes the widow pop rather the window, seal, plastic, metal frame, any parts that don't expand, or any parts that don't allow whats in contact to expand. I worked on cars for a for a number years and was actually accused of breaking someones rear window while it was in the shop. I had gone to work and opened the store and the car which we had left inside the garage mysteriously had a broken window. they tried saying I did it but it was the metal frame's contact with the glass that caused it to happen.

It does actually happen. I saw it firsthand - not a full explosion, but a loud spontaneous CRACK.

OK, so it's the materials, not air pressure. So will cracking the windows help prevent this?

Ok, Noglider, you asked for it:

I leased a '99 VW Beetle, manual trans, Red. The first obvious sign of incompetence was that they purchased my car for me, in fricking NEWTON (I'd given them the info for DCH or whatever it was then). They claimed that their system blocked that dealership since it's located in esSEX(! get it!) county. Luckily, I have a brother in nearby Stillwater, so it worked out.

The car was buggy, windows were defective (recalled after my lease expired), etc.

So, three years later I'm ready to get rid of it, lease is up! My then-partner is pushing for a mercedes c230 coupe, 2nd year production. I'm hesitant, seeking practicality. I'm convinced, we try to get some help at the Catena dealership down in mid-Jersey but are summarily ignored (I guess my hippy attire was a turn-off, whatever!).

I go online to spec it and see what I want. I'm talked into the 17" wheels and BOSE sound system, I want the Panoramic sunroof. We decide to acquire the CD changer separately.

So on to financing. No more leases. Leases bad!! I want to buy, and the only affordable loan is 5-year. I attempt to go through MB for credit, and during my quest I ask for a credit report from my Credit Union. The provide one that shows I owe 80 more payments on the Beetle (like, three times its cost!!).

I call and get a real report (Me: "Um, it was a three year lease. April 02 is the end of that." Them: "Well, we have you down for 80 more payments, so we can't help you." I finally get the manager that I had to get to acquire the Beetle. She fixes it and faxes my credit report to MB.

MB says they can't match CU's loan, so I go with CU with the extra insurance (which reminds me, I need to address that). So after way too much stress and effort, I managed to purchase an expensive car.

Fast forward to July, when I receive my Q2 statement and see that I'm paying on BOTH vehicles. Luckily, I was socking away enough $$$ to cover the Beetle-lease. Many phone calls and I am allowed my money back. I have this statement from the CU that has a bazillion transactions (deducting interest, fees, etc.) for the Beetle-lease.

I then got a call 5 months later (during the height of my job's function of giving computers to students and repairing the upperlcassmen's machines who've waited until now to address the problems; iow, I'M BUSY AS AOL). I owe them money for this, that, and the other thing. I find the NJSA statute regarding leased cars and the lessor's responsibility regarding language (ie, they must stipulate damages and charges therefrom within 30 days, which they didn't) and their own contract did not specify any specs on turn-in, so it defaults to the state rules.

What I found so funny in this (and it isn't really, 'cause it could have seriously messed me up) was that I was carrying both loans for 3 months!! And the difficulty I had extracting myself from a lease deal from my own credit union.

Needless to say, I am highly suspect of all of their dealings and will never use their loan services again.

Maybe it's not so funny, buy I had to make fun of it at the time.

If you don't want to cry, why not laugh instead?
