Hot Bagels (and) a Broad. Call me crazy, but a broad is not quite a sexy gyro lady, but it's good for competition. |

Just a thought from someone who grew up in the area but moved away and visited again after about 15 years. I think the Village looks beautiful! I was so impressed - it looked nothing like it did in the late 70's and 80's when I was a constant patron and student in the Village. Back then we still had the pretty gaslights but thats about it, the rest was just one unrelated space next to another. I noticed that especially attractive was the area by the ice cream place and Cait and Abby's is so inviting. I brought my kids and they loved it. Just wanted to voice that. But Oh how I ache for Grunings. |

Wow. I have totally different memories of growing up here in the 70s>80s. I loved the village! There was Grunings (and how I ache too for that!), GM Stark, Vose Stationery, the smoke shop, Beck's Hardware, TOWN HALL DELI and bread-ends with butter for a nickel, Sonny's Bagels, and Consumer's Distributors (I always was somewhat awed in that place). There was day camp and soccer w/Coach Shue and, best of all - the pool! Slow summer days and festive winter celebrations are what I remember about my youth in South Orange. Hopefully, this is true for kids growing up here now. It is, in the end, a great community to call home. |

BETS I agree with you about how things were in the 70's and 80's! In addition to the places you mentioned there was Bun N Burger, The Village Music Shop, Kens Drugs, Fran Flower Shop, Pickwick Village, South ORange Bike Shop, a bakery, Cuzzo's Market, Bellings, The Sanswhich Factory, Mr Sub, oh and we even had supermarket -Shop-Rite! I have a feeling Lisa was being sarcastic! At least I hope she was... |

I think after re-reading Bets and Just the Aunt you guys are right. SO Village was always a cool place. BUN AND BURGER! I loved that place. I wasn't being sarcastic, I was just trying to say after years and years away, coming back, the place looks beautiful. Lets leave it at that. And I MISS GRUNINGS |

Josh- there use to be a bike shop. It was part of the skate shop. It was in between Rite Aid and Scotland Road. I think the 'beauty' store is there now... |

South Orange had a premier bike shop even before Cheapskates. It was known as Ralph's cycle shop and was located on Valley Street. He sold motorcycles as well. Ralph was a great guy who made it a point to know his customers and provide the absolute best service. |

Pizzaz- Do you remember if there was a bike shop in the place South Orange Music Shop was? I thought there was a bike shop that slowly switched to the skate store, after it was the music store. |

As I don't have a Memory Lane in SO to stroll down, I'll tell you that while there are some improvements that need to be made...it still has much to offer and I look forward to a revitalization of downtown, the Irvington Ave. and Valley St. areas. I agree that Bill's place needs a facelift, but CVS could use a lesson in customer service. The area along the Rahway could be kept in better shape, the Beifus lot needs to be developed, storefronts need improvement...however, there are many beautiful homes, nice parks, the gaslights, etc. Just remember, it will never be the 70s or 80s again. I think that's part of the problem... our BoT seems like they're trying to live in the past with a master plan from 20 years ago and Bill at the helm. |

SO Refugee- Do you mean CVS, or Rite Aid? I think CVS (Millburn) is marginally better than the South Orange Rite Aid. In fact, as a chain CVS is prbably better. Wasn't Rite Aid riddled with corporate malfeasance or something? Also, don't assume that all the folks behind the prescription counter in any drugstore are pharmacists. There has to be one, but the others probably aren't. Those days are over. Just hope that they are accurate and know what they're doing, and that they have a procedure in place for double and triple checking. If they don't, walk out. |

I am new to the town. I have shopped in town and have eaten in town. I can say this for the most part the businesses are very friendly here and they seem to appreciate the business. But I can say this I ate in the Blue moon diner and they were nasty to us. Our food came cold and they just gave us a hard time....we will not be back and this restaurant seemed very dirty. The other question I have for someone do we have a board of health department????? I have mentioned before that the bathrooms in the bunnies restaurant are filthy!!!!!! and we also ate in the cryens location and that place smelled!!!!!!! Voro was spotless. I have tried reservior the wait was long but it seemed clean. |

I like the painting under the train tracks by Blue Moon, and the "facades" painted on the walls on Academy. More of that kind of work would also be nice. It's not an eatery, but Le Jardinere always looks so nice to me (I'm sorry that I don't know enough of French to know how to spell the name correctly). BTW, we have switched to the Walgreen's on Irvington, and have never looked back. The pharmacist and staff are very very nice, helpful, careful, and quick. Even the drive through window is quick! It's not as "scarey" as people might think over there. Unless the beeping cross-lights freak you out. |
