So, in the last campaign rhetoric, Calabrese claimed the Market would be open by Xmas, which is now less than 7 months away. We have heard the Developer's Agreement is signed, but not a single ounce of activity is taking place on the site. What is the latest delay and when will "construction" actually begin? |

Any way to keep the graffiti off the side of the market while it's "coming soon"? |

My best guesstimate for an opening date (and note, it was not me that said thanksgiving or Xmas) is next spring. I am not sure what the delay is on starting construction. I expect that an update will be given on 06/13 (next BOT meeting) from Bill Calabrese.

Last night Bill C stated that they plan to start construction in September which would mean the market opens in the spring.

I had to leave early since there was hardly any air-conditioning (a lot of hot air in the room) and watched on TV at home. Allan, can someone obtain another microphone for either Ed or John and then have them use it! It was impossible to hear anything they were saying. BTW - CONGRATULATIONS to Police Chief Jim Chelel - well deserved! |

Bit of thread drift here, but there is a tie-in...I watched some of last night's BOT meeting (tuned in channel surfing, apparently after any public discussion of SOPAC or Beifus). This was the first time I'd watched a meeting. Not knowing and not pretending to know much about any particular project and being a newcomer, I offer a few comments: * Calabrese's off the cuff suggestion that someone start looking into a major re-development of the Baird Center is off the mark. I've never been to the Baird Center...that said, we have a Town Center/Village that looks like a patient that is having surgery and the surgeons have left the operating room. Let's finish some of these projects before we start tearing more things up. Also, Calabrese seemed completely unconcerned about the cost associated with the project. I found that jarring...I would think, given our tax burden, every single thing the Village does would be seen through a fiscal lense. I would hope so. * Sept. 11 memorial at train station. Calabrese inquired about "his" gas lines being put in to light the flame in time for Sept. 11, 2005. He realized the slip and corrected it. I'm not saying anything about the merits of the project, but clearly he views our tax dollars as available to do the things he thinks should be done - I'm not totally opposed to this approach, if you're a great builder and what you build improves the place. The current Mayor Daley in Chicago does a lot of that stuff - I tend to think, on balance, that Chicago is much better off for it. Then again, I think having clean, attractive, well maintained infrastructure is a big part of what good local government is about...but that's another post...It did make me think someone's comment on MOL about SOPAC being Calabrese's pet project was probably on the mark..yes, a bit of a leap, but I could see that in him...Again, if it brings great glory, he should get much credit. Somehow I don't think it will work out that way. * Finally, Office Hours. Two of the new members suggested having office hours whereby residents could drop in at scheduled times and share their concerns with one or more Trustees. This was to improve communication. I believe it was Eric and Terri Ann that suggested it. Now, since I'm pretty tight in terms of the remuneration that I think the Trustees should receive, it may be hypocritical for me to say this, but I was terribly underwhelmed by the enthusiasm for this suggestion. Frankly, I thought several trustees looked pretty lazy. Calabrese led charge in watering this down. It looks like it will survive as a once a month (starting in Sept) invitation to interest groups to come in for an hour and share their concerns. |

Let me get this straight.... Back in 2001 when the market was first announced, it was stated that construction would take 18 months. During the election one month ago, Calabrese stated that the Market would open in 7 months (by Xmas) Now, 1 month later, the project is now going to start in Sept and be done in May (?) for a total of 8 months. So, how has the DURATION of construction gone from 18 to 6 to.8 months? What has happened in the past month to cause a 5 month slippage of the projected completion? Or is everything that Calabrese says a complete and total lie? This is outrageous!!!! |

MHD: The timeline for the construction is still 18 months. The idea is to get the parking deck behind the market done while the supermarket is renovated so it could open before the condos are done. (I offer no explanation for his Xmas prediction and I stated then that spring of 2006 was a more realistic target date.) SO1969: The "new" suggestion about trustees holding office hours has been raised many times during previous campaigns. My feeling based on the low turnout at trustee meetings, committee meetings, etc is that very few if any would come to village hall to meet with a trustee. I have taken a different route. I have made myself available to meet with residents at mutually convenient times. I have given out my email since my first day on the BOT and respond to everyone. I have met with people at various places including in the city on a weekday. I have rescheduled committee meetings to accomodate a resident(s) who wants a topic discussed. (Not to mention, I try and answer or respond to questions and comments on MOL). We have met with interest groups and neighborhood associations in the past and will continue to do so. I imagine we looked lazy because it was extremely hot in the meeting room (and that is a whole different discussion).

SO1969, It was actually Eric and Stacey who brought forth another attempt to make office hours work. I think it's great to see that the new trustees want to work on ways to make themselves more available but not sure how well residents will utilize their availability. The trustees weren't being lazy at all. I was in that room for 2 hours and if you managed not to die of heat stroke you were in good shape. |

SO1969 - Your observation about Calabrese being unconcerned about costs is right on the mark. I don't think I've ever heard him say we can't afford something. His pet saying is "it takes money to make money" - but he uses it in applying it to the taxpayers of this town.
