Quick Question... Does South Orange host it's own fireworks display or does most everyone just head over to the Maplewood display? If there is one, where can I get more information?? Thanks in advance! Jen |

Jen, The South Orange fireworks display is both free and open to the public. Schlep your blanket over to Flood Hill about 7pm, listen to some fine music, buy some glow rods and then settle back at dark for the out of sight display. |

South Orange hosts a large fireworks display, with music beforehand, at the park downtown. Large crowd comes from here and surrounding towns and sits on Floods Hill. Some find it too large and crowded, but we go most years, and enjoy it. |

You're saying we let people from other towns look at our fireworks display without first examining their property tax bills?!?!

cmonty, maybe you're onto something. The space for your blanket should be sized proportionately to your property tax bill. |

If kids show up bouncing basketballs and talking loudly, the SOPD should be able to round them up and send them on their way -- since I don't believe that S.O. accepts Federal funds for this park or event. |

I'm bringing my windchimes and leaf blower. Hopefully that won't be a problem.

Thanks for the info, all! I must admit that we went to the Maplewood display last year for our first 4th in the neighborhood, because I couldn't find any info on SO events on the website. We were punished by sitting in mega-traffic when we could have easily walked to Floods Hill. Looking forward to spending this 4th in "our" town. Jen |

In the "Soapbox", there is a big discussion about how Maplewood may not be able to continue fireworks in future years since it seems to be privately funded. Isn't this a real simple case of how Maplewood & South Orange can share services to save money? Does anyone really need 2 fireworks displays 1 mile apart? |

If you plan on attending the fireworks in SO, don't bring a wallet or any valuables. There have been incidences of pick pocketing. Just remember to protect yourself. |

Irishprincess, you're absolutely right. It's also a good idea to keep a close watch on whatever items you bring, even things unattended for a couple of minutes wind up walking away.

Ace, Kristen, Lucy and everyone else.. I have been attending the 4th of July festivities for over 18 years and have NEVER had any problems. People are in a great mood, balloons are flying, glowrods are being chased, kids are laughing.. Leave my wallet sitting on an unoccupied blanket, nah, I wouldn't do that on Flood Hill or in Taylor Park in Milburn either. It would be dumb! But come join us and residents of the surrounding communties (Maplewood, West Orange and even Orange and Irvington I bet!)There is no passport check and everyone is welcome. |
