"But again, it's only a problem if it happens on your block; hypocrisy of the highest order..." You really do need a hobby. |

"You really do need a hobby." Right, Arizona- I'll have to look into that, though whining about issues in one's own neighborhood while thoughtlessly disrupting others' is apparently already taken. Enjoy! |

Could someone explain what is meant by authorized? If an individual comes before the BoT and explains that an event is forthcoming and a discussion occurs as to why a particular site is chosen and then the VP consents to the speaker to proceed with the event as scheduled, I ask: Does this communication by an individual in public and in camera view, with the full board present, constitute an authorization? Why is there an attempt to deny the implicit authorization of the BoT after the fact?? Is it for lack of communication, I dunno????

Pizzaz: When did someone come before the BOT to ask permission to have cars and people meet in the park? Maybe I was not there, but I don't remember anyone asking or telling us. However, if someone comes before the BOT or VP, that would be an official communication. Why do you always look to find a negative with the BOT or VP in every situation?

The individual who came forward was specific in her request for acknowledgment. This event has occurred in the past. It is no secret that Grove Park is used on Prom night. I don't recall if you were present to be honest, but she did appear in front of the BoT. At this point, I ask, if it is an official communication as you state why would one not expect a minimum courtesy to the residents that the event will have adequate police coverage and traffic/parking control? BTW: I am dumbfounded by your statement. I can say no more.

If someone came before the BOT, it would be official. That does not mean that it was given an ok or approval, just that we were officially notified.

The woman probably interpreted it as official approval. In a situation where a citizen is coming before an official body the onus should be on elected officials to be very clear about what they are saying to her rather than leave it up to interpretation. |

It happens once a year, for a couple hours when most people are at work, in a public park. It's teenagers doing something fun (with their families and friends) that doesn't hurt anyone. Lighten up. |

bw: try knitting It might get your mind off the inane. Last time I checked it wasn't whining to take issue with trucks barreling down residential streets. Also, I had a lot to do with "thoughtless disrupting others' neighborhoods." South Orange belongs to all of us. I assume you will go away for the July 4th weekend in order to avoid the traffic jams and street closures around Meadowlands Park while another great event takes place there. The traffic won't bother me. I'll walk from my car. ps: I'm done with this thread. I didn't realize how blind others can be. |

Dave: I don't think there was any person who came before the BOT regarding this issue. Usually we say ok and the village president asks the police chief to meet with the resident(s) to review any details and to make sure there is an adequate presence. However, I think Cmonty has it right (his post at 2:27pm today). |

I know the lady in person. She is a member of a standing committee in town. This is now the third time I state a member of the public came forward before the BoT.

What was the date of the meeting? Can't someone just look at the minutes (most of them are posted online)? |

"ps: I'm done with this thread. I didn't realize how blind others can be." Arizona- I'd say look in the mirror, but what's the point- you're obviously as blind as you purport others to be. Actually, I'll be at the Fireworks this year as every year...there goes that old adage about making assumptions. I'll see you there- I'll just look for the myopic fellow with the overdeveloped sense of self. |

thanks susan - looks like it was a grand event - ok people - instead of bickering and name calling we need to find a solution. yes, it's once a year - so is Midnight Madness.. a well-run event organized by parents.. perhaps this event could be added to their to-do list - or another group of parents could take it over - from notification to the proper athorities to seeing that the area is clean and tidy at the end. seems simple enough. |

Ok, I know that I'm entering this thred a little late in the game but here's my two sence. First to those who are under the impression that CHS pre-prom pictures at Gove Park is a long standing tradition; you are sadly mistaken and misinformed. I am a graduate of CHS whitin the past ten years and durring my four year tenure at CHS there was never a pre-prom photo shoot at Grove Park. Now, if CHS is going to start making this a tradition that students should go into South Orange and take pictures at a park, why not do this at say the Floods Hill, & the duck pond? If this area were used the Police with a little advanced notice could block off roads and set up parking as they do for the 4th of July, it would be a lot safer for pedestrians, and there would be less traffic problems. There would be no complaints of blocked driveways, or people walking on other residants front lawns. Family members & friends could park at the Middle School and the limos could park on Meadowbrook Pl. and Mead St. |

Joe- I think this is something that's started to happen in the last 3-5 years. I remember fo a long time bridal parties would go to the Duck Pond to take pictures, or the park on Valley in Maplewood. Not sure how Grove PArk was chosen. |

On the money O & G. Lets not forget about the quality of life issues that are raised during these gatherings, some examples 1. trash left in park and on ground(we all know how hard it is to actually use one of the many trash cans) 2. damage to town & resident's property (grafitti/marker writing on park equipment, breaking or moving of street signs) 3. disregard for other people in and around the park(try walking a path or even getting by on the sidewalk, they sure as hell don't move for you and god forbid if you bump into someone) 4. impact on local business (mainly 319 so. orange ave-cluck u/village pizza) this year so many unruly kids were hanging in front of and in the stores that they lost business from folks who decided not to be bothered also a fight broke out inside one of those stores where a 19 yr old beat up a 15 yr old pretty good....BTW they were both female and one of their friends told the store owner that the older girl was upset at the fact that the younger one sleeps around with evryone else's guy he called the police when they wouldn't leave the store and so many kids were piled up outside that they were leaning on the glass storefront making it shake violently. 5. there has even been incidents where condoms have been left in or around the park I'm not saying that all the kids who show up participate in such activity but the general atmosphere does raise valid concerns for the residents/police/businesses and anyone elso who happens to be in the area when this type of gathering is going on. |

Give it a rest. Did anyone notice these Columbia H.S. graduates were in tuxs and gowns and getting out of limos. Also their parents were there to take pictures. Kids do something nice to celebrate their special day and all some of you can do is complain. Unlike some students from a certain university no one left trash or relieved themselves on my lawn.
