Oh, sorry! I came in in the middle and was just reacting to the issue of people sitting down next to others and then lighting up. At that point, I think that the nonsmokers who were either there first or had no idea they were choosing a spot next to smokers do have some priority ... unless they sat down in a designated smoking section of course.

You're right on the money Sac. Pete was bothered that smokers were given a highly coveted preference of shade, yet some still abused it by throwing butts into the grass. It comes down to basic courtesy, consideration (for others) and respect. It's quite simple. |

Aunty and Peteglider seem to think the whole world exists merely to make them feel comfortable. Prohibition was tried by the WCTU zealots and it created mainly contempt for the law. Smoking outdoors is nobody's business except the idiots who smoke. Maybe some people think peteglider and Aunty are fat and ugly, and they have bad B. O. Does that give the Temperance set the right to ban them? |

Dude -- you can be sitting in the chair next to me at the pool -- and drinking whatever you like -- and it won't impact anyone other than you. light up a cigarette -- and the game changes. the "pool" is not the same as "the outdoors" -- the SO pool is a defined recreation area, not some wilderness or forest. that said, as noted above -- this is not a huge problem! the pool has been quite nice this year! that's what i was trying to say believe it or not. this is such a non-problem, and the last thing we want to do is get the state gov't involved with a ban. |

Do I have this right? The S.O. pool has a designated smoking area, and a non-smoker took a seat in, or very near, the designated smoking area. If I've misunderstood, somebody please correct me. TomR. |

According to the 'rules' at the pool smoking is prohibited anywhere near the pool. The gate watchers told us people are supposed to smoke in the picnic area. Paul wasn't there the past two days to confirm this, but I plan to ask him the next time I see him. IF this is true, then the area we've encountered the obnoxious smokers is most definitely a NON smoking area. To clarify something, I was not saying there are tons of smokers causing problems. It's the handful we run into over the course of the summer who give the rest of the smokers a bad name. When we went to the pool today we put our towels down in the general area we usually sit. There were already some chairs and towels a few feet away with one person sitting there. 15 minutes or so later, another person came over to talk to her. Her was smoking. Did we say anything to him? No, even though I knew him and he would have gladly put out his cigarette if asked. What I find rude is the person who sits a foot or so away from where we're already sitting lighting up; especiall when there are plenty of other places to sit. BUT to avoid any problems in the future, I will make sure to ask Paul to confirm where the smoking area is. I don't sit in the shaded area. If I'm going to be sweating in the heat, I want something to show for it - like a tan... |

Smoking is allowed at the pool because it is an outdoor facility. However, smoking is not allowed on any of the main decks (on the concrete). A few years back paul tried to ban smoking at the pool, however they failed because i believe it was not legally viable or the town dismissed the idea (this was attempted through village hall). On the grass areas smoking is permitted. Lifeguards on the other hand are not permitted to smoke anywhere in the pool premisis. They are asked to leave the pool property for a fix. And no, paul does not smoke. The pool rules (on the board in the breezway and attached below) state "No Food or smoking on the pool Deck" These rules are also available from the gate guards

For the record- I spoke to Paul when I saw him at the pool yesterday and was told there is not a 'smoking section' as some thought. However, smoking is not permitted on the decks of any of the pools. Paul did make the comment, despite some thinking he's a smoker, he isn't. (I told him I was one of those people who for some reason thought he smoked and apologized). To our BOT memebers who I know read this board -Mark, Allan, and Eric you all post, so I know you read, and I've been told other BOT members read but don't post, will one of you PLEASE in a PUBLIC BOT meeting please bring up the smoking issue? Maybe Ed Matthews can put it on record why it's illegal to do anything about the smoking at the pool. I am not asking for an all out ban (though it would be nice), just some way us non smokers don't have to be subjected to smoke. If there were degsinated smoking areas, we could avoid them and the wrath of the few smokers who have no consideration for others. Thanks! (Please give notice if you can get this on the agenda of a BOT meeting so those of us brave enough to say something have the chance to do so)... |

Wow...you all have some very good points. I am not a smoker but I come from a home where everyone smokes and I have asthma-so I just get up and move. I totally understand that smoking is allowed outside. But knowing that there are children and other people out there (esp. in an public area like the so pool) that do not smoke, the polite thing to do is for the smoker to go somewhere else, maybe a couple feet from the crowd. I know that's a pain, but its just common cortesy. Its almost similar to people who just be cursing up a storm and if there are children around you are teaching that kid that its ok to use language like that (its ok to smoke around others who don't and be a slob by throwing your butts and ashes all over the place), thus defeating the parents (if they have done so) hard work on teaching their children manners and what not--i hope that makes sense. But of course there are some stubborn people out there that just don't care about what they do or say around people, and your just not going to budge there opinion on something--which leads to all the ignorance in the world. just some stats--53,000 people die of second-hand smoke a year.
