Doesn't that belong in the Maplewood section?

Not if Matt is suggesting that South Orangers go to Maplewood to eat at SJG.

Ordinary drinks, ordinary food, overcrowded, slow service, crowds that pour out onto the sidewalks and often too loud with too many people and music.

And what again is so great about that place?

I'll be happy to provide you a longer list of places that suck so you can go to those too.

Did anyone notice if they raised their menu prices? They seem higher than they used to be. Or maybe it's just my imagination.

And why do they always seem to be playing Dire Straits CDs?

I want desparately to love St James Gate because I really like the owners...
However, I think that portions are small for the price...the service takes forever and the noise level is not what I think is conducive to conversation with others at your table. That being said, I will try it one more time since the Ledger has raved about the shepards pie.
I was surprised that on more than one occasion that the Ruben was mediocre...corned beef nothing to write home about...
I keep hoping that this will all change as they continue to try to iron out the kinks...
I would hope that they would not sit back and rest on the three star rating from the paper and try harder....given a lot of the negativity that has been written on this board.

BGS - I've never been disappointed with their Rubens - it's a fave of mine (and you KNOW I know corned beef!) Also have never been disappointed with portions - but I DO wish they would offer a small salad & a bit of bread with their dinners.
Try the sheppards pie - it's really good, but be prepared to wait for it.. they start it from scratch when they get an order.
I'll agree it is often loud - I've even requested that the music be lowered on occasion (old lady that I am, my hearing can only focus so far).

The decor is nice, and so is the atmosphere. The location is great. Service is fine.

I had dinner there a couple of weeks ago. The menu is small. I don't eat red meat. So am I out of luck? I asked what the fish special was. It was a tuna melt. It was made with tuna out of a can. That's not much of a fish special.

I could have had a better meal at the Parkwood Diner on Springfield Ave, at a lower price.

And I don't really care about the portion sizes. If the food is good, I'll be satisfied.

Tom, their Fish & Chips is not bad. Nothing to write home about, but passable. Each time I've been there, the food has been good, but there has been something wrong. No one thing consistently. Perhaps the waiter forgot to write down a substitution, or the kitchen cooked something well instead of medium, or the seat I had was wobbly. Nothing that would make me say "Boy, I can't go back there anymore." And I will continue to go back, because it's the best pub environment nearby.

And I like Dire Straits.

I also think their mussels and smoked salmon are very good. They also have a good selection of beers and wines by the glass (especially for a pub).

"crowds that pour out onto the sidewalks and often too loud with too many people"

I know it's not exactly the same sentiment, but this made me think of the famous Yogi quote:

"nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded"

I guess they're doing something right.

SoORLady- well if you order the fish and chips (which is good) you will get a miniscule portion of "Irish Slaw"....and if you want to pay a decent amount you can get a side of the same slaw...not quite sure what makes it Irish but hey...you have been to Ireland and I have not.
I am glad that you have enjoyed the Rubens...I guess that we have been there at different times...
I will look forward to the shepard's pie.
...and when all is said and done, the youth in my family do love it there...so how bad can that be?

A mixture of cooked ground beef (some use lamb), onions, peas, carrots with a bit of gravy covered with mashed potatos and put under a broiler to brown. It's quite yummy.

Thanks Lady. I was thinking it was more like a potpie.
