i went to the JAC today to start looking for a cat. i was very upset when i left there....there was WAY TO MANY volunteers i couldn't even get close to a cat!...they didn't know anything about any of the cats ie. name..m/f if it had shots..nothing! and the rooms that the cats were in were so small. no one really had any idea of what was going on...i know they just opened but i hope the are listening to what people have to say and try to make some changes

Hey SONanny (or anyone looking for a cat),

I just noticed this week that I have a stray mom and kitten in my backyard! Want to come over and catch them?

Incidentally, does JAC loan out Have-a-heart traps?

I believe they are both grey/brown tabbies.

It's too bad to hear such negative news about the JAC. I truly hope they're just experiencing growing pains as they work out the kinks. But it seems as if it's impossible to take a cat there or adopt a cat from there. What's up with that?

Nanny-
Don't get some of us started about the JAC!!! If you're willing to adopt an older very sweet and loving kittie; Risotto is in desperate need of a home. She's a bunch of different (darker) colors, not orange.

Heck, I'll even pay the adoption fee if you take her. She deserves a loving home. You seem just like the type of person she'd love to own. I mean she'd love to have as her 'person.'

That offer holds up to anyone from MOL willing to adopt Risotto.

did anyone notice that in the adoption paper work that part of the agreement it saids "in the animal described above and agree it shall always remain under the protection of said jersey animal coalition inc."....does that mean they can take the cat back at anytime???..who would agree to that? has anyone eles adopted a pet from another shelter and in their adoption papers this is stated????

We adopted Miracle my almost two year old kittie from Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter in East Hanover. I don't remember that statement being in her adoption papers, but I'll check.

I think the statement you mention may have something to do with you having to agree to keep any feline you adopt inside. I've heard stories, of felines being taken back when the contract was broken. Many shelters do this.

Like I told ya, there's a great older house cat named Risotto that would love to have you for her person!

We got one of our cats from JAC about 5 years back. I do recall that language being in our contract but I took it as an attempt on their part to make sure any adopters were serious, and to underscore the type of commitment an adopter was making - i.e., we're giving you this cat but you have to treat him well or we'll come take him away. I've never had anyone come by to assess my caretaking abilities, unless there are JAC spies out there who have me under observation and thus far have not objected to my cat-parenting skills. ;) I really wouldn't worry about it.

When we adopted our dog there was a similar clause in the contract. The way we interpret the statement, and the way it was explained to us, is that if you ever decide to give up your pet you must return it to the JAC - not to another shelter or person.

I sincerely hope that anyone who adopts a pet is in for the long haul. But I think that ultimately such a clause is a good one - it provides some sort of continuity for the pet and makes sure that prospective owners know the full history.
