Who is the hauler for S.O.? Do they pickup at curbside or in back of the house? What type of recycling and bulk pickup?

Thanks

South Orange Disposal Co. 185 Church Street, S.O. 973-762-3880

* 2 20 gal containers up to 100 ft from curb, rear or side of dwelling. (There is a S.O. ordinace against pulling the garbage to the curb, although some do every week without incident.)
* pick up 2x week
* 4/1-11/1, will pick up 2 plastic bags of grass/garden debris, limit 30lbs each from the curb. (prof. landscaper responsible for own removal)

Lots more rules that appear on the back of the postcard-type bill received.

sugggestion - it's officially against their company's rules, but be sure to tip the guys for the winter holidays; I believe it helps them do their job better. (Besides, they do a dirty job pretty darn well, overall. Although, like everything else in town, you'll read about instances with problems on MOL, but that's usually at the company/billing level and not the actual haulers.)

I like that you guys have regular pickups of garden debris in plastic bags. I wish we had that kind of service in Mapleberry.

I believe that the two plastic bags of garden debris is only on the first pickup of the week. Curbside recycling is 1x per month scheduled in advance and posted in the Gaslight. Cardboard is not included in the curbside pickup but may be brought at anytime to the recylcing center under Walton Ave by the new Animal Shelter. Bulk pickup is a thing of the past, although individual items can be scheduled for pickup by the town (not SO disposal) about 1 month in advance and must be brought to the curb by the homeowner. Otherwise, SO residents can bring bulk trash to the recylcing center approximately 6 (or maybe 5) Saturdays during the summer. The first two are usually pretty busy, but the next few are pretty easy to make multiple trips back and forth. There are township employees there to help you unload your vehicle into the dumpsters.

Recycling pick-up is once a month. If you want curb-side pick-up you need to purchase special "toters" from the town that permit automated loading of the truck. Newspaper and high-grade paper are picked up on different days. I beleive that recycling pick-up is handled by a non-profit organization and not SO Disposal.

I always wondered about the recycling since it's so random and disorganized - makes sense I suppose if it's a free service (although, I imagine nonprofit does not mean voluntary). That said, I would have thought that if recycling is mandatory, the town would pay for a service.

The recycling schedule is nuts. Few and far between, with no rhyme or reason to the schedule as far as I can tell. It is NOT straight "monthly" it is more like every 5 weeks or something. You need to look it up in the Gaslight newsletter when it comes out and enter all the dates into your calendar or you will miss them. And if you miss them, since they're so far apart, you will have to haul them down to the recycling center yourself - usually a smelly and messy operation.

Also why do they have that HUGE toter for newspaper and then a teensy little insert for bottles and cans? What is up with that? We always have a few papers down in the bottom of that big bin and then supplemental bins we bought stacked next to the thing filled with bottles and cans. Looks like most of our neighbors do too.

And don't even get me started on the lack of bulk pickup days.

Well Argon, don't complain too much about Bulk Pickup. I was just reading what you guys got in SO and I was feeling envious. I mean they just eliminated our last Bulk Pickup (now we have none) and we don't have ANY way to get rid of stuff. We can't call and schedule a pickup with the town 1 month in advance, and we can't take stuff 5 times a year to the town. So YOU GOT IT GOOD comparatively to us Maplewood people. Seriously.

Unless I misunderstood the bulk pickup thread, we still have one a year (which is part of the WM contract.) It was the second one that was elimnated.

I am wondering why those residents who have a Monday & Thursday garbage pickup don't get charged less for having only one garbage pickup for those weeks when a holiday falls on Monday, as most legal holidays do. By the time Thrusday rolls around on those weeks, you've got so much garbage, usually more than their stated quota. Do other towns work this way, or is South Orange unique?

JayJay, I've felt that way for over 8 years!!! (But do you know for sure that we aren't already charged less than those w/pickups on other days?)

PDG-
I assume we aren't charged less as I never see my bill fluctuate. It would be interesting to compare bills with those with pick up on the other days.

If you only have glass/plastic recyling, put out the gig green toter anyway. It's the big sign that says'recycling here!', if it's not there they miss it. Several months ago, I made that mistake and had tons of plastic/glass lying around until the next month.

Put it on your calander!!

Mrs. T: You can sign up for an email reminder about your toter (and a whole list of other things) just by registering your name. The reminder can be sent to your email or your cell phone.

Same as my most recent bill for M/Th pickup.

Monty, do you get pickups on Saturday of a holiday weekend that gives most people Monday off? Maybe it really does end up with the same number of actual pickups, if so.

Everyone pays the same, even though Monday-Thursday people have 10% fewer pickups because of holidays (check out the schedule - it really is 10% fewer)

What ever happened to Junk week? When I first moved to south Orange we had one week out of the year that you could put out anything free of charge and the town would pick it up. Now if you want things picked up other then your regular garbage and recycling you have to pay a lot for it. I wish South Orange would reinstate junk week.

I am moving to South Orange next month and have no idea what to do with my garbage. I know I have a bunch of different colored cans but thats about it. Is there a website that has the pick-up schedule and regulations about what goes where?
Thanks!!

MHF,

I think you may be referring to the recycling containers. The GREEN one with the black insert is for your newspapers, bottles and cans. If you have a BLUE toter, that is for 'shiny' paper, magazines etc. As for regular garbage pickup, you are responsible for your own containers. SO Disposal picks up twice a week, at least sometime and the garbage is to be left at the rear of your home, not put out on the curb, though on your second pick up day of the week, they usually allow an extra bag or two at the curb.

We've found a nice cool beverage in the summer or even in the winter goes a long way to having better than average service.

VGolfer,
Thanks for the info. Coming from Brooklyn I am used to walking out my door and throwing all my junk down the chute whenever I feel the need. This is going to take some getting used to...
Thanks again!
