Alright, I'm going to level with you all. The most important thing now is that you remain calm. There's no reason to panic. Now, it is true that the new market project is delayed, slightly delayed, but the supermarket will open soon, real soon, definitely by Christmas....2012.

HEY Guess What?!
I just came from the Village and as I'm stuck sitting in traffic on South Orange Ave; sitting at the light by Blockbusters, what do I see? Workers actually working on the Shop-Rite!!! There was a dumptruck out front and a bunch of workmen pushing wheelbarrows of supplies into the old Shop-Rite!!! It looked like they were mixng some kind of cement. Maybe they plan to paint? Whatever was going on they were moving all those folding chairs out from before the election!!! So maybe, just maybe, it will be finished by this Christmas!!! Then again, maybe not. My alarm went off and woke me up!

Anyone have any new online games to play? My meeting is boring!!!

Who checked out the session last night, man I heard no thing happening about - you know what I mean - what's going on? I saw no update, no update man is this for real? I say you get more information from a crossing guard than you do watching them. What gives - their not into jiving any longer. Their backsides got whooped for so long, they no longer can stand on their feet. I said it, they no longer can stand on their feet. You got me reeling now, man. You clowns talking to me or are you going to sit on your *** till I spank it again.

You really shouldn't start drinking so early in the morning... "wake and bake" was fun in college, but not so appealing in adults.

everyone complains about a supermarket Pathmark is a huge supermarket and has everything you could possibly need. I hear the one being built is going to be a specialty market...break twice the price...milk $5.00 a gallon etc.

Just a quick clarification...

Where is this fabled Shop Rite supposed to be built?

Any thoughts on whether it will be finished before I graduate? (2008?)

Armed guard out front....I use the Pathmark at least twice a week and have never had a issue as it relates to the need of a armed guard. SO I really do not understand the comment. ANd I understand we are not getting a supermarket we are getting a specialty market there is a huge difference. I am sure the prices are going to be much higher at the new specialty market.

The old Shoprite (Liquors) is being renovated into a Whole Foods or some kind of local market. At least, that is what the anticipation is all about. By 2008? Easy, what is your rush...take up a second major and skip summer sessions.

There is no armed guard. There is a 20-year old kid wearing a uniform shirt and plastic badge and listening to a personal stereo. He shuffles around like he is on Thorazine. It is kind of wierd.

I think the implication was what a shame it is that we live in an area and age where any kind of guard is necessary in a grocery store.

that was my point I go there all the time and I have never felt unsafe in any way. So i do not understand why there is a guard and I really do not understand why everyone in the town complains that we do not have a supermarket! We have a HUGE pathmark in town! Personally i do not think a supermarket belongs in the center of town. I understand that we are getting A SPECIALTY MARKET and that is a great idea for the center of town. but i have a feeling alot of people are going to be complaining that the prices are going to be high there.

Dave wrote ... "The old Shoprite (Liquors) is being renovated into a Whole Foods or some kind of local market. ..."

Actually, the market is going into the big hulking empty building immediately east of the railroad tracks on South Orange Avenue. Cripes, it's been empty so long that people forget there was onfce a market there.

The market that's going into the old market isn't going to be along the lines of Pathmark. It's supposed to be a fancy foods kinda place, not a place where you do your big weekly shop.

User58- A local resident was carjacked and shot about ten years ago in broad daylight. She survived but was severely injured. Pathmark used to hire S.O. cops but stopped for some reason.

Pathmark is a dump. Until recently Pathmark hired a South Orange Police Officer to stand outside and keep an eye on things. Only go there when I'm desperate, which is even less now that the police officer is gone...

Kings is a ripoff (except for produce). Would much rather drive to the Shop-Rite or Pathmark in Livingston...

Pathmark and the A&P are both dumps. It would be great if they would just bulldoze those places. I thought Pathmark was going into bankruptcy or something, and A&P never does what it takes to draw in consumers. Its pathetic. Just travel to other states and see what the supermarkets are like there. Try Wegman's or Giant or some of the Stop & Shops. I like the idea of boycotting these miserable places, which I do with my wallet. I, too, shop in Shop Rite in Livingston, but begrudgedly. Remember that the owners of that Shop Rite owned the dumpy Shop Rite in South Orange and never invested a penny to improve it.

I'll take that as a "no".

From Meeting Minutes Sept 12:
President Calabrese then updated the Board as follows: 1) Mr. Beifus has everything in place
to start construction except for a water permit from East Orange Water which he will be
receiving tomorrow and, therefore, should be starting construction hopefully by September
26th
; 2) the supermarket and condominium on Vose Avenue has been experiencing difficulty
with the environmental condition of the site and easements and is also hopefully looking to
start construction by September 26th;

I admit no YEAR was given, but most people assume an update given on Sept 12 about events to happen 2 weeks later are reasonably certain to begin as scheduled and in that same YEAR.

I can only imagine what the next update will be?

Would it make sense to lobby the A&P to improve this location? Other A&Ps are very nice and I would happily shop at this one if it were better.

A&P is in Maplewood. Pathmark is in South Orange. The municipal dividing line is between the two.

Just a reminder that roughly 1/2 of your property tax bill comes from the School Board, which serves both towns, so commercial property taxes collected in Maplewood serve SO children (and homeowners) too!

Drove by the Flat Iron building on Vose and saw utility work being done - had high hopes - but it looked like a separate issue from the Village Market construction.

Read the post about "environmental issues", not sure if it was in reference to the old shoprite site or the buildings further along Vose.

If it is in re. to the Vose buildings and they have "environmental issues", just be prepared for a long haul. Years ago I asked about the buildings and was told the old Shoprite Liquors location had been an automobile dealership/repair facility in the early part of the 20th C. Being that the properties back up on the RR Tracks you never know what "interesting" things (like old car batteries, lead, oil, etc.) will be uncovered once the entire parcel is scraped for impending construction.

Flat Iron is a type of building, not just a specific Manhattan building. There is one on Vose, btw SO Ave and the po.
