I am shocked that the MOL community hasn't brought up the gem of a carjacking, and then arrest of the offender later in the day. It made the star ledger. Im sure the details will be posted by some of the insiders. |

A Humvee(sic) was taken by force from Cleanway Carwash on Tuesday afternoon and was seen in Newark just minutes later by S.O. Police. They pursued it onto the Parkway and off into Irvington, then back into Newark with the State Police and other police agencies until the driver jumped out and ran. Police followed and trapped him in a city block, where helicopters and tracking dogs flushed him out and he was arrested. Great job, S.O.P.D.! |

Did an employee of the carwash take the car, or was it someone passing by? |

You know, it's funny. I was going to post about my experience at Cleanway on Monday. I got "the works" for $25, and the car literally looked worse when they were done than when I brought it in. When I complained and pointed out streaks and spots in the finish, and spots of gunk that they hadn't removed, they gave me a very condescending song-and-dance about how I had to get a hand wax to make my black car shine. I gave up after about ten minutes. I guess the experience could have been worse, huh? |

Amie - I think that Maplewood Tire on Springfield Avenue does hand-washing now. They usually look pretty busy and you could always go read a book in the park across the street while you wait! |

I was at Cleanway the day the Humvee was stolen. It wasn't taken by force. The dummies that work there left the keys in the ignition with the engine running. There was one guy drying the ugly Hummer; when someone came out of nowhere, jumped in it and took off! I told myself years ago I wouldn't go back there, but I was getting tired of people telling me my car needed to be washed. Since I was heading in that direction, against my better judgement, I went there. I couldn't believe I had to tell the man that gives out the tickets to please not smoke in my car. Then, he gives ME a dirty look as if I have no right to ask him to not sit in MY car while he was smoking! I asked for 'the works,' who knows what they actually did because the wall prevents you from being able to watch. Only cost $10 something, so I'm guessing they just did a standard wash. Next time I'll go out of my way to the handwash car wash on Valley Road in West Orange. By the way, what a total waste of resources to use a helicopter for a stolen car. Give me a break...

Here's the story from the Star Ledger: SOUTH ORANGE: A man stole a Humvee from an Irvington Avenue car wash and led police on a chase through South Orange and Irvington before he was finally tracked down in Newark. South Orange Police Chief Jim Chelel said the incident took place at 2:40 p.m. at a car wash on Irvington Avenue. The car had just come out of the wash and was briefly unattended. As the car's owner made his way to the vehicle, a man approached him and lifted his shirt, revealing a weapon. The assailant, who police would not identify, hopped into the dark-colored Hummer and drove off. Police were alerted and told to keep an eye out for it, said Chelel. Michael Bradley, a South Orange officer, spotted the vehicle while he was in the Vailsburg section of Newark. Chelel said Bradley followed the car through Newark, Irvington and then onto the Garden State Parkway. When the car exited at Lyons Avenue in Newark, other police joined in and began to tail the vehicle. The thief pulled the car over near Lyons Avenue and Dewey Street, said Chelel and jumped out. Police ran after him and he was found hiding in the backyard of a home in Dewey Street. He was arrested and taken into custody by Newark Police. The Newark Police Department, New Jersey State Police, Irvington Police Department and the Essex County Sheriff's K-9 Unit assisted in the chase.

I think if someone approaches you and lifts up his shirt to display a weapon, that's taking your vehicle by force. This was pretty brazen. It's better to know about it than not know about it. |

JTA- There was a handgun shown, and the helicopter is used to protect the cops in pursuit so they don't get ambushed- several Newark cops have been shot this year in that very area. Money well spent. |

If you recall the NJSP helicopters were updated with Federal Grant money for homeland security...So if the State Police wants to take twenty minutes out of that mission to help with local crime, I think its a great use of resources since the Feds are paying for it to be used in the NJ region. |

I know first hand of one SHU student who was the victim of an attempted car jacking in April--at 4:30 near Irvington Ave. At other points there have been muggings (mostly of SHU staff and students walking out of campus towards the train or their parked cars in the neighborhoods around the campus); all of these have occured around the same time of day afternoon/eary evening. We're not even talking about a 2am heist. Someone said these are "brazen" folks, and I agree. |

Spitz- I must have missed the gun part. All I saw was some guy jump in the Hummer and peel out of the lot. Then some other guy yell 'he just stole my car.' I wasn't sticking around because a stolen car is a stolen car. We were told back in the late 80's when my car was stolen, the police don't chase after stolen cars. That's what insuracne is for. To tell the truth, the guy had a Hummer, so bummer... Sure it's mean, but most people who drive cars that size, well nevermind... Showing a gun or not, I still don't think it justified the use of a helicopter. |

Hmmm, nothing better than people talking about things they have no clue about. JTA, you have already been corrected but it just goes to show you that even if you "were there" you still wouldn't know what the heck was going on. Yes a gun was shown, and in this case we call this a carjacking. BTW it is possible for someone to own a high priced vehicle just because they like it. Please explain a valid use of a helicopter. Don't forget that Essex Co is so up the police have to work with severe restictions when it comes to apprehending that guy who just stole your hummer (or in your case an eco friendly gas-hydrogen hybrid car that only cost you 1000 bucks and draws no attention) if back in the 80's it was bad imagine now when the criminals are so brazen that they'll stop and shoot (read-kill) the officers behind them. They don't just run anymore they put up a good fight. So an armed man is fleeing the police in a carjacked vehicle, during the chase the guy rams two cop cars and sends 'em flying, the chase continues, state PD hears whats going on and decides to help, you should't be questioning it's use, you should be calling the state police and thanking them on behalf of so residents.

Another great job by SOPD in today's Star-Ledger. This time they chased a carjacked vehicle out of E.O. and caught it in Orange. JTA- you might be a little more accomodating about the helicopters if your life was the one at risk. These guys deserve all the help they can get. |

ACE789nj....Why even waste your time typing. Obviously we have several ignorant people in town who think a carjacking is a joke. Obviously this person came in town to commit a violent crime. By using a helicopter to get the individual we the residents should be a little more thankful knowing that he will not be back in town for awhile. I hope no officers got injured during the chase and apprehension |

10 years ago my husband was rollerblading in East River Park. A bunch of kids skated up to him, grabbed his back pack and watch. There was a police patrol boat in the river and someone flagged it down. The land police arrived. A helicopter got involved. They were looking for the kids land, air and sea! They found the kids! They prosecuted! My husband (who I didn't know yet, actually), went to court and his judge was -- JUDGE JUDY!!!

Could be, but don't look at me. There are a lot of Hummers out there in middle America, mostly driven by the kind of guys you see in reality TV shows and wearing baseball caps backwards. Every time I see a Hummer, I think to myself, "There goes someone desperate for attention and power." For the record, I'm glad the Hummer owner in this case wasn't hurt. |

I still don't get it, why can't someone buy a car without falling to these stereotypes? Should I assume that anyone who bashes a hummer owner is a liberal treehugging hippie, are you guys riding your bikes to work so as to not trash the planet? Do you guys drive one of those little 3 cylinder gas-sipping matchbox cars? There's a LOT more BMW's, Audi's and Benz's up on that hill, are all these folks as pretentious as the big truck owners with unfortunate "shortcomings"? |

Isn't the point of this thread the carjacking? Who cares what someone drives? I care that there are thugs out there who put our lives at risk. Shouldn't we be thinking about how to deal with that problem? Maybe we need more police presence in our neighborhoods, or we will all need to be driving armored humvees. |
