Not a good sign, according to Star-Ledger article today (page 13). Columbia HS, both Middle Schools and 4 elementray schools listed.

I found it interesting that because it's CHS's second year on the list, students have the option to transfer. Three more years on the list, and the HS has to restructure - wish they would do that before they're forced to.

Ink,
Please tell me where do you think they can transfer to?

Roger,
I don't know. My guess is that it's a part of the tag line that all schools that have been listed for two years get without having any practical meaning - unless it means you can transfer to any school in the county....? Anybody out there know?

The footnote (*) in the article for that transfer option said "within district" and something about "only for schools receiving federal education aid" so I don't really know what that means for us. Especially since four of our six elementary schools were listed.

I did notice that Millburn Middle School is also in the list... can the high school be far behind?

Was there a chart or some graphics? I read the article online, but saw no mention of SO/MAP.

edited: Went to NJ Education site, and I think I found a list of the EW schools (among many links in a press release) ...

Brett-
I didn't see the article, but now I'm going to read it. It's ironic 4 of the elementray schools are one it! Considering we only have six of them. South Mountain, The Annex, Jefferson, Clinton, Marshall, and Seth Boyden. Not good at all!

The Annex is part of South Mountain for purposes of counting 6 elementary schools. I believe that South Mountain and Jefferson were the only schools not on the list, but I don't have it in front of me. The list was in the paper along with (but perhaps on a different page from) the article.

I thought Jefferson was on it. Marshall is not, and only because they are K-2 and do not take the NJASK.

SM/A is considered one school (K-5) for testing purposes (among other things)

I shouldn't have posted without rechecking. I'm sure you're right. So South Mountain is the only qualifying school in the district not on the list.

Not the best news--but the purely selfish part of me says thank goodness our soon-to-be kindergardener's school (South Mountain) is not on the list. But certainly it seems not to be in the larger interest of S.O./Maplewood to have this "honor", wouldn't you all agree??? What's to be done???

What in the world does the transfer option mean for our towns (as others here have already asked)? Don't get this stuff, at all. Perhaps I will when our family is more than an interested observer. As you can tell, I've got more questions than answers.

Personally I'm not getting to worked up over it in terms of what it means (or doesn't mean) about the job our schools are doing.

What I'm worked up over is the whole NCLB thing and how it is negatively impacting public education ... whether or not our particular schools are on the list.

And my kid's school (SB) may be on the list and South Mountain not, but I would be very surprised if anyone from SB is going to be asking to transfer ... if that is even actually an option (which is not clear.)

I'm with SAC on this one...the main issue is not our schools, but this law and what it aims to do.

See the thread over in Education for more detailed discussion of this law and its potential impact. The article that Nan posted is especially provocative.

Selfish? Yes but T.G that our kindergarden ( from next week) - the annex-is not on the list. I had to move out of Newark because there is NO WAY I am sending my kids to school in any EWR schools!
