How could you possibly infer that my agreement was with the fundraising. To the contrary, I was of the position that the Library should be supported by public funds, whereas the location of the Tony Smith Sculpture should be done by fundraising with ample community discussion and involvement. My agreement with Susan was posted on Saturday. I don't know how you count minutes? BTW: I would like to see a computerized scale model of the piece on Sloan Street without the Gazebo and fountain. Personally, I rather like the Gazebo, and as previously mentioned in another thread, the fountain has never worked properly.

Quote:Susan - You're right, but fundraising for what, the Tony Smith Sculpture or the library?
That's how! Even PDG thought you meant the Library. |

He thought I was being funny because we were going to the issue of where public funds should go first. I quoted what I agree with pertaining to Susan's post. I hope we've reached clarity on this point. |

A quick note: the SHU library contains a small childrens section on the 2nd floor. On parking at SHU during the week: in the morning hours (say 930-12) the main lots will be hard to find a spot in, but I know of a pretty accomodating parking deck that everyone can use(if you drive in the first place, seeing as there are alot of people who live within a few streets of the campus) ! and SO Maven, lay off pizzaz- its painfully obvious that he isnt seriously suggesting to close the SO public library entirely, nor does he think the library should only be open for his children. |

Does anyone know if work is actually being done to repair the major physical problems at the library? The roof leak could be causing serious damage even beyond what's visible, and to keep the staff working without a/c week after week in this weather is way beyond inconsiderate. Mark? |

The final scope of what is going to be done has not been decided, but the roof will be part of it.

Whoa! I thought I was sort of kidding, that surely work was being done, but no? At least it's being examined and bid on, right? Or heaven forbid, is some part of the town govt getting around to getting around to it? (Mark, how do you manage to reply so quickly??) |

On Friday, you said "we have already bonded money towards repairs for the library" How did we bond when we don't know WHAT we are fixing and therefore how much it will cost? |

MHD: We know what needs to be fixed and we have an idea of what it will cost. The roof needs repairs along with some other work. The amount bonded is a max amount that we will spend on repairs this year (not all of the money is for the library). MJC: The work will be done by whomever wins the bid. ( and to answer you question some days, I spend too much time checking MOL).

Does anyone know whether the library roof repairs is in the current year capital plan. Why does the BoT act so slowly in so many regards? I know it's apart of the bond issue, but for how long has it been on the radar screen for capital budgeting purposes. I recall the CBAC took note recently in a presentation before the BoT of a lack of planning and prioritizing in this regard. Any thoughts? How long has the roof leaked? How long has the HVAC been out of service? Are there any other in your face repairs which should be addressed immediately as it pertains to the library? What about old glory, Village Hall? |

Has anyone taken pictures of the exterior facade of Village Hall, lately? I don't give a who Tony Smith was, it's disgraceful. |

And what about the inside? And the inside of the Baird Center? These are the first places people go to when they move into a town, and what a first impression. |

The CBAC has recognized that infrastructure repairs are a major issue. The following document is one of the recommentations made by the CBAC to the BOT at the July 11th meeting.

I took these pictures of Village Hall a few months back. I think it needs some work. I think the folks who work in Village Hall deserve a decent place to work. That goes for the police, fire and DPW as well. As for the library, I wonder why all that work was done on the inside before stuff like the roof was taken care of. It is depressing to see new carpet under a leaky ceiling.

Imagine the howls on this board and through the village if our taxes were raised to repair the phyical plant of the Village,i.e. the Library, Baird, Village Hall, etc! Hey, MHD, you wouldn't have any objections? And Pizzaz would probably just advocate tearing them all down and using Maplewood's. |

Thanks, Dan, for posting the photos. It is even worse than I remembered Howard, thanks for posting the CBAC document. Does the BOT respond in some fashion to the CBAC proposal? Is there a way (I suppose writing) for us to support CBAC's proposal? If you haven't bothered to download the CBAC document, I recommend it. It is short and to point. If I can paraphrase, it recommends a formalized capital budgeting process to list, prioritize and budget long-term for capital items. I would say that it may surprise people that this isn't already done, but I don't think it surprises anyone on this board. It also lists a handful of projects that are in the works. While I recall seeing most on MOL in the past, it was daunting to look at just the handful. Not to always go back to it, but anyone who wants government funding for T. Smith should review this list, re-order it based on your priorities including the scupture, and share it back with the rest of us.

Hey Maven, Spending taxpayer money to repair essential buildings is fine (assuming we're not talking about re-decorating like Donald Trump's apt). That's a far cry from spending taxpayer money to pay the politicians, subsidizing a developer that the majority of the residents didn't want, and buying a quarter million dollar statue. |

Maplewood is a nice town. I enjoy riding by their Town Hall. The building and grounds look well maintained. Their taxes are comparable to ours, don'tcha think? I seem to recall that the code enforcement officials put a SO resident, Mr. Betz, in jail before Christmas for failing to maintain his property. Who do you think they could be, hoodlums? Perhaps, we as residents should file a complaint.....

I'd say we should politely decline the statue and use the money to fix infrastructure. No one thinking of buying a house here will miss it. But they would miss a library, decent public buildings, schools, town employees, and so on. Pizzaz and his friends oppose the statue. But they are serious about opposing everything else that they don't personally use or that doesn't benefit their own businesses in town. |
