in the coming weeks when Seton Hall students move back to campus to see all of the stores in the village put out 'Welcome Back' signs? (Bunny's and the Tire place across the street from them are the only places I can ever remember doing this.) Every other college town that I have visited does that. They are happy to see the students return. It would be nice if South Orange started to feel that way also. Could go a long way in improving relations. |

And what about those businesses on Irvington Ave close to SHU getting their act together and start catering to the college crowd. That has the potential to be a really nice group of stores for the kids. Look at what Princeton and Madison storeowners have done for their captive audiences. Its not about the brick sidewalks, its about the landlords and merchants having the vision. |

Agreed jayjay. Especially since it doesn't involve - or shouldn't anyway - a jitney. And even as someone who lives in the area, I'd be open to a bar of some sort. |

jayjay, those places on Irvington Avenue all need a serious makeover. There are also very few stores that cater to the students (same in the village itself). The stores that are on Irvington Avenue look tired and worn down. Both the Village and Irvington Avenue should be welcoming the students back. |

Totally agree. I just don't know what it will take for landlords and store owners to get it. You've got a potential customers base of thousands of kids (and most kids I know like the opportunity to get off campus, and away from it for a while.) Diners, delis, Starbucks, pancake houses, within walking distance to SHU, and with special ambience, I've got to believe would do very well. |

Ah, a pancake house! Now that would be pretty cool. I had thought of the other things you mentioned but now that you mentioned a pancake house, oh it's hard to believe that an IHOP wouldn't do very well. With all of the churches in the area also, not to mention the university, it's hard to believe there wouldn't be a line waiting to get in on a Sunday morning! A diner is an absolute no-brainer. While most homeowners in the area would most likely be in bed by 11, most of the younger population in the area are just getting started on their evenings. To have a place where you could get a good burger and fries and other such "diner food" could really make a killing in South Orange. With SOPAC finally being built, students and others going to the movies, would have a place to head to after taking in a flick. There has to be more to South Orange than beauty supply places and 'coming soon' signs. I'd love to see them replaced with a ton of 'Welcome Back' signs and places that are student friendly. |

...actually, I've seen this happen before already... I have seen PIrates signs/logos in the windows at Cait and Abby's, Blue Moon diner, Pirate's Pizza, Gas Light, Cluck U, and Pizza shop next to Cluck U. I'm not sure if the restaurant owners painted the signs, or if someone from the university did, but it does happen from time to time... |

Pony - I think this is what you're referring to:
We did those twice this year. Some businesses already had some SHU signs up. We'll be painting again before the University Day celebration begins. 99.9% of the businesses were very open to doing things like this to make the downtown more "student friendly". |

Signs are great, but you've got to provide what the kids want first and foremost, and be within easy walking distance to the school. That's why Irvington Ave. seems like a natural to me. I don't understand if its the landlords or the lack of interest from the right kinds of businesses, but this is another example of how a professional to figure this out would be money well spent by the town. (Better spent than on tearing out a gazebo, but let's not get into that.) |

I think it would very nice if South Orange had a Friendly's or IHop in town. It would be a place were families and collage kids could go. I wish more of the stores catered to the collage students. After all South Orange is a collage town. I see towns like Madison and New Brunswick have more things geared towers the collage students. |
