Hello people. We have been living in South Orange for several years now, and recently bought a home (Tuxedo Park). We have rented so far, and normally rental properties get a safety inspection by the township. Not sure who did the one in our current house. It seems useful to me to have a safety inspection of our new property we just bought. I am pretty safety conscious, and like to think I use common sense. Our home inspection revealed some potential issues already, but in these cases it would be very nice to have an extra pair of eyes. Especially the eyes of someone familiar with potential hazards that can occur in a 100 year old house (and possible remedies): balloon framing, escape routes etc. I though the fire department would make an obvious candidate: other US town explicitly offer a safety inspection / walk through, and the SOFD website actually claims that its goals is to "reduce and completely eliminate fire/emergency matters. Strong efforts to achieve this goal are made through educational programs and through inspections conducted by the Fire Inspector Thomas Mercadante". Calling town hall wasn't exactly useful. I was informed that inspections are not available to owners of residential properties, only commercial and rental. When I talked to a friendly fireman, he in turn replied that 'if we would be doing inspections, we wouldn't have time to be fire fighters anymore". Huh? I would like to prevent problems rather than having to call emergency services. Basically for someone to walk around, and point out (from their expertise) hazards (fire or not) that may not be obvious to me. Balloon framing, escapes, exits, unsafe materials. I cannot imagine it would take more than half an hour. Anybody here have experience with safety inspections? Is there a person in town to talk to on this? I find it hard to believe that the SOFD would not be interested in preventative measures, especially if those are already performed for commercial buildings. Thanks!

Hmm, seems to be a tough question.. Nobody here tried to have a safety inspection? Who would be the designated township person to ask? Am I posting in the wrong forum perhaps? Thanks!

Welcome to town! I think a lot of people are on vacation this week. Also, it's not unusual for it to take more then 3 hours to get responses to your posts. If you try posting this in the 'Please Help' Topic or the 'Fix It' Topic. You might have more luck there. |

Did you try your home inspector with whom you worked in the buying process? Ours was extremely safety conscious. Very thorough and I would recommend his inspection services again. I've even seen his banner on MOL. All Pro Home inspection. 973. 761-0050. We worked with Ernie Borsellino. see the website: https://home.comcast.net/~allprohome/index.htm! |
