Interesting entry in Tracey's blog about the store called Street Rock closing up and being replaced by a deli: http://www.nj.com/weblogs/southorange/ |

I love the idea of a small deli - Wonder if they will have their own version of a sloppy joe. |

Wow, I had heard that the new owner of that building was looking to open a resturant. I hope that deli sells milk, eggs, great hoagies and Doritos. And I hope they stay open until at least 8pm!!! |

Woops, I just read Tracy's blog, and now I feel bad. Street Rock was a cool little shop and added a lot of character to Sloan St. I am sad to hear things went down that way. In a perfect world, Street ROck would remain and that crummy framing shop would be replaced by a deli that sells milk, eggs, great hoagies and Doritos and stays open until at least 8pm. |

I have used the frame shop on Sloan and found the service excellent. They did a good job framing every project and they obtained a box full of special brass hooks so that I could use the picture moldings in my house. |

Jeep: Pizzaz (co-owner of Bunny's) has stated that he already has plans for the space. Maybe he can share what those plans are at this time. |

Street Rock did inquire into the space and I was willing to work with him. We never connected enough to further the phone discussion. If he should wish to continue to do business in South Orange, please have him call me. I have to say though that another very interested tenant is considering the space. (And yes, I refuse to rent to a nail salon - although those offers have come in!) |

Daniel M. Jacobs, PP, AICP: I'm glad the frame shop does good work. Not the most enticing store front, but I suppose that doesn't matter when you want a picture framed. Personally, my pictures are all in store bought frames. So I don't know much about frames. Anyway, I am more likely to pick up a sandwich than a frame on my way home from the train. So I maintain that in a perfect world, a sandwhich shop would replace the frame shop. Besides, it doesn't seem like a frame shop needs much foot traffic anyway. So again, in that perfect world I keep talking about, the frame shop would relocate (not dissapear, as we've established this is a very fine frame shop--perhaps up near the vacuum cleaner repair place) and a commuter-friendly sandwich shop would move in next door.

Allison- In my opinion, a good business is not only one that does good work, but one who draws a customer in. Your impression of the frame shop was that it was "crummy". That says to me that the owner is missing opportunity to do more business. You were turned off. I am too by the appearance of the place. Many South Orange business owners have to start realizing that their storefronts and appearance are as meaningful to how much business they can do, as is the service or product they may be providing. In addition, it helps the town too if the place looks good. If a deli does go into the Street Rock place, I hope they maximize the location and utilize that outdoor area in the back as well, as an outside place to sit with a sandwich and a drink. |

I agree staying open late would be huge...plenty of folks get off trains even after 8 p.m., I'd think 8 would be worthwhile, I think that is when Crane's in Mwood closes (I'm frequently on the 7:15 arriving 7:45ish - so are many others). I realize there is added cost for staying open late, but it is many of these long hour folks who are happy to pay a bit of a premium (for me, a good one, don't want to speak for others) for milk, juice, eggs, snacks, etc. , esp. if they can grab a sandwich for that night's dinner to boot. I've been waiting for the new, coming soon THD to fill this hole in my life. Glad to see someone else will step in. Look forward to patronizing the new biz. As for the current biz, don't know it. There are plenty of empty store fronts around the village. That business, in my mind, shouldn't need a super premium location...people who use framer's, I think, tend to find them. I'd think this space and Pizzaz's space would be more attractive to foot traffic dependent businesses who would pay for location. |

Jayjay, I totally agree. One wouldn't (hopefully) submit and ad with typos in it. And a store front does more for a local business than any ad might do. SO1969, So right. The later it gets, the more I'll pay for easy take-out after just stepping off the train. I mean, the less out of my way I have to walk, the less I have to wait in line, the more happy I am to open my wallet. So many people in SO commute to NY, and so few businesses do a good job of capturing that market. At the end of the day (at least from my expereince) we are a tired, hungry, semi-stressed bunch with money in our pockets. |

So how do you get the frame shop store to move elsewhere? I have been in there and he seems perfectly content with his business and his location. |

Perhaps Main Street South Orange could work with him to clean up and spruce up his storefront. I believe they have funding/consultation services available to help businesses with that. |

I would think that another restaurant next to Bunny's would be considered too much competition for their tastes. No matter what the fare would be. |

Bunny's is a cheap pizza joint with booze. I loved those places when I was in college but now I prefer more comfortable settings without the big screen TV showing some sporting event. Even worse, I saw they had a BOT meeting on one of the TVs one night so I turned around and walked out. That does not sound like competition for a restaurant. |

I have no problem with the BOT, it is those meetings I hate. Back to Street Rock - Sorry to see any retail place move, but I still don't understand. If they were doing a decent business, then how come they can't move into one of the empty stores? |

By the way, I went in there twice and clearly it was not for me. Did anyone who has been posting shop there? I was not sure who their target customer was, but I have a feeling most of the people who post on MOL did not go in the place.

Hey, Jeep: I've been in Street Rock. It had a rockabilly vibe. Kitschy stuff. Not for me, but I know lots of people who love that look. It would actually probably do better in a town with more of an underground. The building was for sale when Street Rock moved in, so I can't imagine how this eviction is a complete surprise (that said, I know none of the details, and may be totally off here). Commuter Comics seemed to move out just when the bldg. went up for sale, and I can't help but wonder if this was not forseeable... That said, it is sad that to see this place go. I love how they always had funny and seasonal window displays. A bright spot on Sloan St, for sure. While I'm at it, I want to plug Urban Femme. They let me bring my dog in the store and sell all the hottest names. I just love getting a latte and browsing around on a Saturday a.m. Ladies, if you haven't popped by, do so! Guys, consider buying gifts there. You lady friends will be impressed with your good taste! |

Lots of people seem to know who Terrance P. is, but I'm not one of them. Has he owned a restaurant previously in South Orange? Is he affiliated with Town Hall Deli? Campus Subs? |

I was not surprised at all that Street Rock left. I never sow anyone in there when I was on Slone Street. An other thing I always thought that Street Rock belonged in places like New Hope PA. or The Village in NYC. I feel that if Street Rock has moved to one of these places that they will do great business, because they will be in a place were there are more of kind the people that will shop in their store. I wish them good luck in there new place. |

This is not the new location for The Campus Sub Shop. We are still looking at a locations in town and may have an announcement soon! Terrance used to come in our store every so often. The last I heard of him he was leasing a catering truck and selling in NYC (or something like that). He's a good guy and will probably do well. |
