I rip a lot of CDs, but I don't use ITunes or have an IPod, plus I like to rip at different qualities depending on the CD and change titles and and artist names, especially for books on CD. The problem is, Musicmatch lets me changes titles and burn different qualities, but its freeware has so much hobbleware incorporated into it that it's become so time-consuming that it's useless. Windows Media Player insists on dictating how you file everything, using their Library, which makes it useless, and gives you no opportunity to burn in different qualities. So what else is out there? |

um.. why not use iTunes? It lets you import in several different formats including MP3 at varying bitrates, and AIFF, which is full quality. You can also change artist names, albums names etc., and you don't HAVE to copy the song to the iTunes Library, though it's an easy way to organize music. |

doesn't itunes force you to only use itunes ever after, especially if you have an ipod? i don't want to be wedded to one technology because then it can hold your information hostage (as Bill Gates has built an empire on). |

ummm, no. You are thinking of when you buy music from the iTunes Music Store, it is copyright protected and it is in a format that not to many other players can read. for music you import into iTunes, or rip with iTunes, it is free of copyright protection and you cna use it however you want, granted of course that the player can read the format that you have ripped the music into. |

You might want to try Audiograbber, http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/ or dbpoweramp, http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ HarddiskOgg, http://www.fridgesoft.de/harddiskogg.php FreeRip, http://www.mgshareware.com/frmmain.shtml mp3 utility, mp3DirectCut, http://mpesch3.de1.cc/#mp3dc |

iTunes also lets you burn your music to audio cd's - so you can play cd's in any player. If you do that, btw, you lose the copy protection in music purchased from the music store. You can then re-import as MP3's or whatever format you prefer. Kinda ironic how people are leery of computers because of Bill Gates, isn't it? I actually see that a lot. Apple has its proprietary format for purchased music, largely because they were the first to add Digital Rights Management to audio, and protect the music companies rights, but its iPod and computers play a variety of formats. To quote a post from another thread.. "Apple Rules" ! |

I use MediaMonkey, which has a freeware version I've found pretty useful. It goes to mp3, wma, ogg, flac and a bunch of others I don't understand. It also seems to have pretty good database/library capabilities, though I haven't both to figured those out -- I organize everything into directory folders on my player and play from those. I've used iTunes a bit and so far I'm not blown away.

I use iTunes just to load/unload the iPod... agree that its not 'blow away' software by any means. For a player, I've had good experiences with Winamp.
