I currently have a Verizon cellphone (400 minutes, $39). My wife wants a phone too. Her phone will be used mostly for emergencies and other short calls. Should I upgrade our Verizon plan to 700 shared minutes ($69), or get a whole new "pay as you go" cellphone plan. What other companies besides Verizon would you recommend? Thanks for the help. |

check if you can convert your existing plan to the verizon family plan; the second phone will be only $9.99 a month. i've had the best coverage with verizon in the area, having tried cingular and sprint. |

According to the verizon website, the third phone in the family plan is $9.99. I think their advertising on TV is very misleading. Here's a screen shot from their site:

I agree that all of this is as confusing as can be. See my post last week on replacing a broken phone. We have the same plan that Composer John has, but with two phones. We pay 9.99 for the additional line. We signed up for this, however, almost two years ago. My suggestion is to try to get them to add the second phone to your existing plan without upgrading to 700 minutes, even if initially they say they can't do it. Say you are going to go to another carrier for the second phone. Good luck, you will probably need it.

Thanks Bob. Is it even possible to add a second phone without upgrading minutes? I'll try - we'll see what happens. |

$69 seems pretty good for two phones, especially if calling each other will be free. Will it? We use T-Mobile which is a little less and we get a few more minutes than that, though I don't remember the exact details. You can get a good pay-as-you-go plan from http://www.tuyo.com. It's 20c per minute for the first ten minutes of each day and 10c per minute thereafter. No contract, no minimum. Disclosure: I work for the company that provides this but I don't make any money if you buy this service.

Tom-- I used to have T-Mobile and loved the features, but just could not get any reception when I lived in New York. How do you find the reception in Maplewood? I'd love to switch back from Verizon. |

Tuyo offers an interactive coverage map. Very cool. Tuyo uses T-Mobile's network, so this map applies to T-Mobile customers. http://www.tuyo.com/coverage/default.aspx It does show some weak spots in Maplewood. Service in and around my house is a bit weak, and that's an improvement from recently. It was non-existent. So things are getting better. Coverage is very good in some parts of South Orange and Maplewood.
