where do you shop for groceries? i usually shop at whole foods in millburn, but they always are missing something (usually several things) on my list, and i hate having to go to more than one place. plus, it is very expensive, and it is way too crowded, even on a weekday! any suggestions for a decent, nearby grocery store? i'd rather drive a little further than go to 2 stores.... |

It's been my experience that no one store ever has everything I want. That being said, have you tried the Shoprite in Livingston? Nice big new store with a huge selection of just about everything and reasonable prices and an in-store cafe where you can grab a cappucino to drink while you shop. From where I live in Maplewood it's only about 15-20 minutes drive. 483 S. Livingston Avenue Livingston, NJ 07039 The other option is to order everything through Peapod and have it delivered right to your kitchen, which is what I do. |

I find the Shoprite in West Orange to be bigger and nicer than the one in Livingston. It is also a couple of minutes closer to SO/Maplewood. |

Another vote for the Livingston Shoprite. I almost never have to go to a second store to get everything on my shopping list and the prices are very reasonable. |

Sometimes I go to Shoprite on Main St in Millburn. It's just a little farther than Whole Foods. So you can go to Shoprite after you discover what Whole Foods is out of. I realize you prefer to shop at only one place, and that would be ideal, but it's not really an option if you have high standards (which we have, too). If you're more price conscious, you can go to Shoprite first and then Whole Foods. But I notice they charge more for organic whole milk and yogurt than Whole Foods does. Sometimes I shop near work before or after work or during lunch. That works better in winter than in summer, because I can leave the food in the car all day.

Am I the only one that loves Kings in Maplewood? They have great produce, all the essential grocery items, pretty easy parking, short & fast checkout lines & indestructible bags that double as home garbage bags. What more do you need? |

Wegman's in Woodbridge is the bomb. They sell rice milk in the gallon container for what most other places charge for the quart size. (Baby allergic to milk in the house. The savings is worth the trip) I also like the Shop Rite in Jersey City for big shopping. It's relatively new, very clean, and I can usually find most items that I need. |

Wegman's is indeed the best grocery store on the planet, but it's a hike to get there. We pretty much do all our shopping between Costco and Trader Joes.

Cmonty, we do the same and supplement with Whole Foods (for fresh bread!) and sale items or whatever store we happen to be near. |

Kings is all right but they lack many ethnic foods. I haven't foud one store that has everything I want. I guess that's why I do our main shop through peapod then do small shops to supplement. While on the subject..anyone know of any asian grocery stores close by? |

Soulful: It's behind the Woodbridge Mall right off Rt. 1. Directions...ummmm.... Take the GSP down to rt 1 in Woodbridge, go south for 1/4 mile? take left onto the Mall entrance road and pass the mall it's on the left side maybe 1/4 of a mile? Ok that's bad directions. Maybe someone else can be more specific. For the record, I think Wegmons is also overpriced and merely just ok. |

That's the route I take to Wegmans... there may be a better route in terms of avoiding traffic, but I don't think there could be a more direct route. On a weekend, with all the traffic, it feels like a journey. There's a great Lowe's next to Wegmanns, though I guess we're getting our own soon so that won't matter. |

Massive Kings Fan, except they don't carry Hershey's Vanila Shakes, but then they are so in demand that most places don't have 'em. |

Directions to Wegmans is off a bit, you need to go North on RT 1, not south. Without traffic you can get there in 20 minutes driving fast! |

West Orange Shop Rite is in the back of the Essex Green shopping plaza on Prospect Avenue. Make a left at Rooney Circle near the gas stations and follow the circle all around until you see the Shop Rite. |

I went to school in Rochester and learned to love love love Wegmans. I have only been to the Woodbridge location a couple of times, but I have trekked out to Bridgewater (take 22 to Route 202 south, just past 287). It's 25 miles, but the roast beef, coffee, and produce are so worth it. Plus there is a cafe and a play room for the kids. Plus they will take your groceries to the car for you. I have to disagree with loving Maplewood's Kings. As I have mentioned, I have seen a guy behind the fish counter clipping his nails. The selection is limited. I treat it as a glorified convenience store -- and convenient it is. I also like the Shop Rite in Livingston and in Essex Green. |

ess: The Wegmans in Woodbridge (just down the parkway) is only 25 minutes from Maplewood (I think Bridgewater is 10 minutes more) and also has the cafe, play room etc. BOTH great stores. And for the concern expressed earlier in this thread for going that distance with cold/frozen things they sell these fantastic thermal bags. The largest one is $7.95 but works great! It says it works up to five hours. They're designed sort of like gym bags with comfortable handles and all. I have no compunction about bringing home ice cream mid summer, traffic be damned. Although I love both stores the Bridgewater store has the edge with the quality of the food in the food court if you're going as a nosh and shop thing. And the hours can't be beat. 6 A.M. to midnight seven days a week. |

Shawna -- Another Asian store is Captain Fresh on Rt 22 West in Watchung (near the BJs). About 20 mins drive. The Millburn mall also had a store that sold some Asian items (mostly Japanese I think). There is also another one (mostly Filipino items) in Morris Ave in Union called Casa Manila. |

Oakland-They sell them at Kings and at Shop Rite...they are silver on the outside with the kind of plastic handles that snap together. I have a large and a small and swear by them...we got to Wegman's near Phillipsburg somewhere out that way and everything is ice cold when we get back to Maplewood using these bags. |

Oakland: Wegman's sells the thermal bags. They're in the freezer section in Woodbridge (where I got mine, don't know about Bridgewater) on their own display stand. The sizes are small, medium and huge. The top price is $7.95 They zipper shut (much better than the annoying snaps on the cheaper models) and have comfortable cloth handles. I keep two in my trunk. |

BGS: Sorry I didn't read your post before writing mine. The Wegman's bags are different (and more expensive) than the silver ones (which are also good, I use both). What I don't like about the silver ones are the snaps. Mine keep popping open (I know, user error). In either case the long drive home with cold stuff is not a problem. |

I ain't been to the Woodbridge Wegman's but the Bridgewater store has the best Asian buffet and it's inexpensive. Two meals, usually for less than $16.00. Sometimes they have Indian food there. And yes, its better than Neelam. |

Reesa: Newark Avenue in Jersey City between Summit Avenue and Tonnele has an Indian district where you can get groceries and clothes, but the parking is awful. There is an Indian grocery in Parsippany at the rt 202 split from rt 511, right off rt 80., Oak Tree Rd in Edison not far NW of exit 131 of the Parkway also has a whole district with clothes and groceries. |
