I am being jumped all over in the Soapbox because I admitted that I was too unwell to scrape the ice off of my sidewalk.

I would like to know if anybody is aware of a service to call on an ad hoc basis if unable to shovel / chip one's sidewalk.

The occasions that one might have for not shoveling snow include

1) being elderly or permanently disabled - in which case you need a permanent solution to this problem. Who would such a person contract with, to make sure that the sidewalk is cleared in a timely fashion every time it snows?

2) temporary, serious illness such as flu or injury - for this you'd need a service you can call on an ad-hoc basis to clear your property.

I'm very curious if #2 exists at all, as I have had occasion to use such a service and can foresee doing so in the future as well.

These are especially important to people who live alone or who have disabled spouses or spouses who travel frequently (thus not available for shoveling duty).

I was reading recently about a not for profit in the Boston area which provides all kinds of services to senior citizens of the type most often found in adult communities while permitting seniors to remain in their own homes. Snow removal was just one of the services offered.

Wouldn't it be nice if Maplewood were to have a similar service? This might be one way of encouraging some of our fleeing seniors to stay in town.

Many landscapers do snow removal in the winter. Do you use a landscaper who you can call when the need arises for snow removal.

I know that Oriental Gardener does this.

If you live near us I'm sure I can convince my brother in law to help you out. In our neighborhood we look out for each other. We use to see to it the elderly man's walk across the street from us was cleared when it snowed. Whoever was out first would start it, then the next person out join in to help. Same with an older woman who use to live down the street.

We take turns between the man who lives next to us doing each other's walks.

You might be able to find some high school kids looking to do some community service. Or the Boy Scouts? Hmm, I just came up with a thought? Perhaps this is something one of then Scouts could organize for next year as the project for their Eagle Scout?

You might have some luck if you start a thread in Please Help saying you need help clearing your walk. It can't hurt to ask.

No, I believe her question is for next time. I have already volunteered to help her this time.

Dave said God was punishing me (for a comment I made on another thread .... ), but I guess He relented as He sent us some nice warm weather and there is no more ice out there. But thanks, Tom. (He's still sticking it to me vis a vis the back pain, though ... OK! I give up! You have a white beard and sit on a cloud. Now, please stop the pain ... )

You are right, next time I will either #1 call Tom, or #2, post on Please Help, before it gets to this. Failing those two things, a few other nice people such as JTA and meandtheboys have also offered assistance - there are some very decent people living in our town.

I think that #2 is unlikely though, given that some people cut absolutely NO slack whatsoever for any reason when it comes to sidewalks, and a plea for help would likely lead to some non-zero percentage of vicious attacks. Sometimes I wonder why I or anybody hangs around here, it seems like a kind of sick S-M thing going on at times.

OK - here's why I hang around here - Joan, Tom, Dave, Cynicalgirl, Greenetree, JTA, meandtheboys, and a few others who are just routinely amusing, entertaining, educational, charming, and even sometimes inspiring.
