My husband and I are hoping to take our toddler-aged boys to a rustic rental cabin on a lake (with pool if possible)in a really pretty area somewhere not too far this summer. Anyone know of such an area? Any good/bad experiences with renting a house? Any good websites for such a thing? Many thanks in advance.

We were looking for something similar (but closer) for New Year's Eve weekend and someone on this board recommended the website "vacation rental by owner" - www.vrbo.com. We found a cheap, huge house in the Poconos and had a great weekend.

We ended up in Big Bass Lake in Gouldsboro, PA. I guess it's one of the older communities, so our house was really tacky and a bit honkey tonk, but it was absolutely fine and only about 75 minutes away. It has a lake and a pool in the community center. There seemed to be perfectly lovely homes in the community. We were going with other families and needed to keep the price down.

If you find some towns in PA or NY that interest you, look them up on the site. Good luck.

Try the Lake Waramaug area of Connecticut. Has some nice inns, b&bs, and some houses for rent. Biking around the perimeter of the lake was a lot of fun when we were there a few years back. There are some interesting small towns in the area too.

Didn't seem quite as congested as the Lake George area in summer.
