We just finished paying off a car loan, and received a letter from the bank stating that we should submit the enclosed signed and stamped vehicle title confirming that our loan is paid off to the DMV and they will issue a lien-free title in our name alone. I don't remember doing this with our old car. Does anyone know if we have to do this? Doesn't the title with the signed off lein-holder suffice? If we do get a new title from the DMV, will we have to pay another fee? The fee shown on the current title is $40. I really don't feel like standing in line and having to pay again. I don't even know where the nearest (or most efficient) DMV office is! |

Like you I just received the letter and stamped title. The MVS website states you have to send a notarized letter from the lien holder stating the loan is paid off. I called Trenton, they said mail the (unnotarized) letter and title and they'd send you a new one. There is no form online, nor did it state there was a fee. I sent it in last week. I'm waiting... |

Thanks las. I'll check the website for the address. I'll also make a copy before I send it in case it gets "lost". |

What a good feeling, that last payment. IIRC, my last check's memo said something like "take that you fu***rs!" |

Thanks. Now we need to keep our other (12-year-old) car running for another couple of years so we have a break before starting up a new round of car payments... |
