Have been having some "back issues" and have heard from a friend she's had great results with acupuncture--and it's something I myself have thought of trying. I'm starting yoga, but not until March. Would like to try an iterim "fix" to get me through.

Has anyone ever done it around here? Is there an acupuncturist (not sure if this is the correct term) in the area that folks can recommend? What might something like this cost?

Thanks Tom.

I'm sure I know the answer to this question, and, obviously I'll be checking with my provider, but does insurance ever cover this?

I don't know, but I think the answer is "it depends." Even if it doesn't cover acupuncture, it could be worth paying out of pocket. You won't have to go often, so it's not that expensive.

Meand - your insurance may cover the costs if the treatment is for a pain-related issue. Chris Butler at the Maplewood Holistic Center, 137 Parker Ave, 973-763-0032, was recently recommended to me. Visits are around $70, but many accupuncturists recommend herbal concoctions too, so that cost is extra.

Thanks, SOL.

Just checked with my insurance company and they do cover acupuncture, unfortunately neither your guy nor Tom's wife's guy are included.

These are the names I got:

Dr. Yang, West Orange
Dr. Xu, Livingston
Dr. Zheng, Montclair

Anyone?

I had an acupuncturist treat me for (of all things) my sinus problems, and the treatments worked for abit about 6 months. Very effective, in fact.

Just the same, I was a bit nervous for each session. You could even say ( I can't resist this) that I was on pins and needles.

Just don't drink anything for about an hour after or you leak through the holes (just kidding).

Innis--I have also had great success at having an acupuncturist "move" sinus blockages for me. It is very powerful stuff, this acupuncture.

Hi Meand,
Not sure if it's the same Yang, but if yes, I have heard good things & send folks to her for birth related stuff (breech, etc.):
Dr. Xiu Xia Yang

I, myself, have gone to Kristen Perman at Terra Sky center in Summit (she lives in Maplewood) - she's great. http://www.terraskycenter.com/services/acupuncture.htm

There are some stretches that can really help with backpain too (depending on where you are holding tension or whatever). Feel free to PL me for more info on that.

There is also
Eastern School of Acupuncture Japanese Meridian Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine

Montclair, NJ
Provides a low-cost clinic by appointment for the public.

Thanks exwood and doula. The phone number for Dr. Yang is the same, so I have to assume it's the same person. Always good to have a recommendation so I'm not going in blind to something completely new. Also an added benefit that they're both women.

ESL, will keep that in mind about the water.

Another big thumbs up for Kristen Perman at Terra Sky. Local mother, really easy to talk to. Made me feel really comfortable.
