So I had this bright idea to machine wash my down coat last week, and I forgot to take it out of the washer: when I went to put a new load in this morning I found it still in the machine, all damp and stinky. I'm running it through the wash one more time with regular detergent, but somehow I don't think that's gonna cut it. Any suggestions on how to save this mildewy mess, or am I out of luck? |

Try adding some vinegar to the rinse water. I'd say more than the standard 1/4 to 1/2 cup that I use for all rinsing - maybe a cup would do. And/or add some tea tree oil with the vinegar. It will stink like Lysol for a little while though - but then that smell should dissipate fairly quickly. Tea tree oil kills mildew. If you try this, post here and let me know if it works or not - I've never actually used this remedy in a situation like this one, and I'm curious to know if it works - it should, in theory.

Washing it isn't going to be your only problem...Un-clumping all the feathers even after it seems to be dry is always fun! |

it will be fine - i wash my down coat at least once a year. The mildew smell will come out with one wash and throw it in the dryer with a tennis ball or clean sneaker. |
