My company switched health care providers last month. My eye Dr., chiropractor, & accupuncturist are not on the plan. So, I'm searching for new people. Starting with the eyes: My closest options seem to be: Dawn Opticians in S. Orange, Maria Cardona in Maplewood, Excel Eye Care & Laser Correction Center in Union, Pearle Vision in West Orange or Short Hills Ophthalmology. Any recommendations or horror stories?

Our family uses Dr. Farbowitz at Short Hills Opthamology. We've had nothing but great experiences with them, although the optical shop is a bit pricy for glasses.

We've used Maplewood Vision Center on Springfield for years and we've always been very happy (all four of us wear glasses and/or contacts).

We also use SH Ophthalmology although I see a different doctor there whose name I can't remember (young guy, Indian name). Good experience and agree with the expensive glasses comment.

I use Dr. Kronengold, who was recommended on this board. I liked him -- thorough and personable. He's on Old Short Hills Road in Livingston. (973) 992-5005

We also use Short Hills Opthalmology. Happy there, my husband uses Dr. Farbowitz and my sons and I use the other doctor(and I can't remember his name either)

I hate to slam a local business, but avoid Maria Cardona - she messed up my prescription so badly that it cost me about $700 to untangle her mistakes.

When I went to her with documentation of the bad prescription and a letter from the doctor who straightened it all out she refused to refund a penny.

I really trust in Dr. Donald Greenfeld at Opthomology Associates 288 Millburn Avenue in Millburn. Not sure if that is the same place.

If you're a Costco member, take your eyeglass/contact lens prescriptions from your doctor and get them filled in Costco's optometry department. You'll save big bucks.

Dr. Sally Bregman is fantastic. Extremely friendly, really put me at ease. As someone who put off going for years, I'd say I was very pleasantly surprised by the whole process.

Related question: As I said above I go to SH Ophthalmology, mainly because I got a referral there a few years ago. I've been wondering lately if I should switch to an optician. I have a very light prescription and I'm not sure why I need to spend the money to go to an opthamologist. Would the optician refer to an opthamologist if they thought it was necessary? If all I really need is to update my prescription isn't an optician fine?

RE Costco, they are cheap but they have a pretty pitiful selection of glasses if you want anything stylish/designer. I got a second pair there and they are fine, but I couldn't find anything I loved.

I had a very unpleasant experience with Dr. Cardona's office staff. I refuse to go back there. I use Dr. Bregman on Millburn Ave., but I don't know if that would work with your insurance.

Dr. Bregman is one of the coolest people I've met, ever. Not only does she serve us well, but I actually look forward to seeing her.

Hey, how come my ancient signature just popped back, after being gone for years?

It's true that Costco's selection of frames isn't huge, but I found something I liked. I think it's worth checking out if you want to save money.

My disposable contact lenses were $6 cheaper per box at Costco than they were at my doctor's office. That definitely adds up!
