Our cat "Cali" just ran out the door about 2 1/2 hours ago...we live on Ridgewood near Berkeley, if anyone sees her, she sort of answers to Cali, is less than a year, very fragile and extremely skittish, great. She runs away very easily, if you happen to see her, we would be grateful if you let us know when and where, thanks. Marisa 973.447.2517 |

Marisa- What a beautiful cat. I'd call the JAC to let them know to keep an eye out for her. I'll also keep my eyes out when I drive through there in the morning. |

I'll be at the JAC today, so I'll give the heads-up. I'll also check the cat room, just in case. Good luck! |

unfortunately she doesn't have ID on her. I can hardly pick her up which doesn't help in a rescue attempt. She doesn't go outside at all, unless like in this instance when she escapes. |

She's probably near the house, hiding. Have you put out a box with a favorite blanky or something that smells familiar to her? Put it sideways so that she can "hide" in it. You could also put food and water near the door and leave the door open so that she can come back in the house. |

You might also want to look in to borrowing a humane trap and enticing her in with some particularly smelly food. That way you can be completely assured of catching her. If she's skittish, she may run away again if you approach her for any reason. I think you can borrow humane traps from the JAC or animal control. Once you get her back I would strongly suggest you speak to your vet about a microchip and, at the very least, get a collar with a nametag, since she seems inclined to run. |

Thanks for the good ideas...i just put a box out with food and her favorite blanket. I have seen the 4 other strays that my neighbor feeds...grrr...and still no sign of cali...so i just feel like all the lures I set up are an invite to them. They have already eaten all the food I put out, but I just keep putting out more. The microchip is a good idea...that will be a must for her and Ziggy - the cat who she followed out the door - once I get her back...I agree that she is close by. I have to think that it is just a matter of time before she gets too hungry to be afraid anymore and comes out looking for food. I am not so familiar with the JAC going to check out the website right now. Thanks for your help guys...back to searching. |

You must be a wreck. Think small, think dark - inside garages, under decks, in pots, under hoods of cars. Did Ziggy come back? Do you know where he hangs? By the way, she is absolutely beautiful! |

Thanks, yea I am not doing great. I am trying to think as small and dark as possible, I once found her in the fireplace, so she is not very picky. Ziggy only made it a few feet, he is pretty easy to catch... |

You've checked with neighbors? They've granted you repeated access to garages, cellars etc? The problem with bringing in outsiders is we'll all scare her away, but seeing as I would just die if this happened to me, I'm happy to to come over with my flashlight and knock on doors. I can likely get you three people for a while tonight. I p/l'd my contact details. Please call or write. Hang in there. -Lynn |

You can also try bundling up very warmly and sitting outside, waiting for her. A bit away from the blanky box. Maybe as it gets dark and her nocturnal instincts kick in, she'll come home. I am so sorry that you are going thru this. I've had a cat go walk-about for hours and it is not fun. I second the idea of a collar with a bell. We had a runner & kept the bell on her so that we could hear her sneaking up to the door. |

Have you tried sitting outside, shaking her favorite treats? My cat always comes running when she hears the treat bag rustling. If you want help, pl me with your address. I'd be happy to help look--if you don't think it would freak her out too much.

Thanks Camnol, I have used everything I can possibly think of to make noise...toys, treats, spoon on canned food - she loves food and any sounds indicating it...At your recommendation greenetree, I am bundled up and sitting outside waiting to see if she comes around looking for food...I am kind of hopeless right now but I feel like she is going to have to come out of her hiding spot at some point...Her box and blanket are in the middle of the drive way and I am sitting on the stairs to the deck with treats and food. Thank you for your offer to help Camnol, I just think she is so frightened that she is tucked far away right now and will come out when she is ready....she was like that for the first week in my house. |

Greentree's and other's suggestions are right-on - keep on putting out the food. My cat used to come out of hiding if I went outside and clicked a can opener while I called her name. Cats are smart and they're survivors - chances are she's nearby keeping warm. It's cold tonight, but not so cold that she's in any danger. Cats will curl up in a little safe place and stay warm and wait until they get their bearings and are ready to come home. Good luck - you must be feeling so horrible. Cats who run outdoors almost always come home safe and sound - I promise. |

thanks this is all making me feel better...i just feel so bad for her. She is so afraid of everyone and everything but like you said Lydia...she is probably curled up somewhere safe and warm. She always finds a place to hide. I am continuing to put the food out...My mother is spending the day here tomorrow watching out and searching for her, so hopefully we'll spot her soon. Thanks for the support and advice, I really appreciate all of it. And thanks again Camnol, I will let you know! |

Thanks everyone! I am so so happy...she came home and acted totally cool...as if nothing ever happened...I think she knows where the love is and I am going to take measures to make sure it never happens again. Her and Ziggy were reunited and he wasn't thrilled with her smell...but eventually they fell right back into playing and beating each other up. I slept through the night like I never have before...thanks everyone...you were all so helpful and I felt like I had so much help and support yesterday it was amazing. Thanks again, you are all GREAT! |

She was probaly right there all along. They freak themselves out & find a place nearby that feels safe to them. You probably made her feel safe enough by all the things you had outside letting her know that she was home. If it should happen again, keep in mind where you found her; she'll probably head there again. But, get that bell! Oh - big sigh of relief. We live on a busy-ish street where people speed alot. When The Monster was loose one night last year, I stood on the curb for an hour, at 2am, so that I could stop speeding cars in case I saw him run across. We animal people are out of our friggin' minds! |

Greenetree, that was one of the things I thought of when Marisa said she lived on Ridgewood. I was afraid poor little miss Cali would get spooked and dart out in to oncoming traffic. Glad that didn't happen. Don't forget the microchip Marisa. Cat collars are made to break away if the cat gets itself into a bad situation. Whereas, the microchip is permanant and all shelters and vets are equipped to check for them. |

I am glad everything worked out. Sometimes it takes awhile for a cat to come home. Last fall one of our neighbors outdoor cats came up missing and was gone for about a week. The neighbors had pretty much given up hope when kitty showed up one morning. He was absolutely filthy and thin as a rail, but not injured in anyway. The best guess is that he got trapped in a garage and it took awhile for the garage owners to realize he was in there. |

Thanks! If she was gone longer than 24 hours, I don't know what I would have done. This has definitely taught me a lesson. So yes, i have made many promises to go get the tags and inqure with Dr. Stack about the chip...this weekend i will do it!

Marisa - You don't know how many people were worried about Cali - a friend of mine came over today and chided me! She said the thread made her so sad she couldn't read it anymore (maybe she'll chime in) Anyhow - everyone is so happy you are reunited. I think it's not the indoor cats that get run over so much as the outdoor cats who feel comfortable roaming. |

Thank you JTA and thank you Lydia...I am so happy - today I was so elated about her return that nothing bothered me...Lydia, tell your friend I am sorry for making her sad...it really did help to have everyone to talk to during the day as the time passed - and for that I am so thankful...I was so surprised by how many of you were interested in Cali's return...I thought my post would be something everyone would breeze by, figuring they hadn't seen her, so I really thought it was amazing. I even got a call from Maida Lind (Purr-fect Pet Cat Sitting) who said she had read about Cali and was calling to check in. Guess that's cat lovers for you. Cali is so afraid of everything I can't imagine her being comfortable anywhere near the road anyway, so I agree with you Lydia. Anyway, it's play time here, I must go entertain the kitties. I can't stop saying thank you to all of you, I feel like I just won an oscar, THANK YOU!! |

Marisa- Remember the little girl you saw me with at Micky D's last week? I printed a picture of Cali and showed it to her when I told her the story of her escape and return. She said to tell your Cali is soooooooo cuuuuuteeeeee and she's glad she came home! She also wants me to ask if she is a Maine Coon, because she has one and Cali is very 'furry,' as her cat is.
