Anyone have any ideas on how to get almost a week old wine stain off a carpet? We are going to take up the carpets at the end of the winter but I am tired of looking at these spots on the floor. Any helpful ideas?

I've had good luck getting red wine out of my cream-colored cotton table cloth by first covering the stain with table salt and then pouring a little white vinegar on it and rubbing it in. Not sure whether the texture of your rug with work but the salt seems to absorb and rub out the stain while the vinegar, well, works wonders for lots of cleaning tasks.

Here's what "Mary Ellen's Complete Home Reference Book" (some book I was given when we got our first house - it's from Restoration Hardware) says:

Wine on carpet:
"Sprinkle with salt or baking soda, leave until absorbed, then vacuum. Or pour some whiskey on a rag & rub into spot until stain disappears. Or saturate with club soda, then blot. For red wine: Blot, pour on white wine, and blot again. Or test for colorfastness on a hidden area, then try shaving cream from aerosol can, then sponge with water."

I know some of this is four just-spilled wine, but maybe something in there will work for you - good luck...

Is it red wine? There's product sold at Bed Bath & Beyond that's designed specially to get rid of red wine stains. It's supposed to work great. Haven't tried it myself.

I've had good luck with Resolve carpet cleaner. It got red wine off my beige-y carpet.

believe it or not, white wine will instantly get rid of red wine stains (and supposedly vice versa, but I've never had the courage to try it that way.) I've kept old white wine in the laundry room for just such ocassions, but have used fresh white wine while having a party and it worked instantly - very cool. Not sure how well it'd work on a week old stain, but I'd try it first.
