If I make a recording of a TV program or a movie, for my personal use, am I permitted to LOAN the recording to a friend?

Thanks for any input.

Well, it seems to me that if you are not making any money off it, then it should not be a problem.

Profit doesn't enter into whether it's legal. The copyright owner is the one who has the right to say who may and who may not copy the work. Profit can, however, enter into how likely a lawsuit is to result. But these days, there's so much illegal copying going on that copyright owners are now going after people who are not making profits from their copying.

TomR, I don't know the answer to your question, but if it's illegal, it seems to be very close to the line. I.e. I wouldn't worry much about it.

Noglider,

Not worried about it at all.

The question came up recently with some friends, and I was just curious.

Dave,

Why is the library in trouble?

monster, your avatar adds a certain emphasis to your words. A very happy, friendly type of emphasis.

TomR, perhaps loaning it is personal use?

A guy named Jordan Breslow has published some good articles on copyright law on the web. The first one is from the 80's.

This is the only thing my signature says.
