Anyone know how much to move a household from the west coast to the Maplewood area? (I asked once before, but now I can't find the thread in the archives).

Thanks.

We just moved and spent $6000 to move from outside Chicago to S.O. Loved our movers - Croffut & Smith and Atlas Van Lines.

My mother moved about 12K pounds of contents from San Diego to South Orange in 2001 for 6K. I think she used Allied Van Lines.

$6500 approx from the Southwest to south orange for a 3BR home. Don't used ALLIED van lines. We were majorly screwed by them (damage to our goods and then no compensation despite the extra insurance we paid.) Don't used PACIFIC van lines either. It just goes to show, you don't get better service with a larger name. Just costs more. We've never had good experience with out of town moves. Good luck!

Re: Allied...My Mom had a very positive experience. I, frankly, had never seen movers that were so professional and meticulous. In fact, when she moved this summer to PA, she called the San Diego office to have the exact same movers. And, she is a VERY picky person--who had a lot of high end art and very nice china. Not one thing was damaged.

I don't doubt that Jenny had a terrible experience, but in my experience with movers (I've moved with pros 4 times), it just depends on who you get. (Sorry you had that experience Jenny.) I had a very difficult move this past summer myself (with United) from SO to PA. They underestimated the contents, by A LOT which led to fewer movers, one truck too few, etc. In the end, and because I had asked for a binding estimate, I paid not one penny more for their mistake.
