http://www.autotrader.com

You can enter your zip code and specify the radius.

I've used ebay, but it's not as easy to choose the location. I ended up buying a car listed on ebay near New Paltz, NY. I wouldn't have bought it sight unseen, but the used car dealer says he now makes most of his sales that way. I beat a buyer out by a short amount of time, and she was in Oregon. Buying a used car is different these days. The dealers bundle a warranty with the car, which makes buying safer. At least that is the way it was presented to me. In the end, I have to say it was a trouble-free experience.

We used cars.com, which has the seach engine as well as the link to the VIN checker-outer, which is what any used car buyer must check before buying. Worked for us. You might also look on Craigslist, NJ area.

There also is a local market here in MOL classified. (A good friend of mine is selling a very well-cared for 2001 Acura TL for $11,900 on MOL)

Beware of Cars.com - just in case...I was looking for a used car and went to cars.com. I found one I liked it was an unbelieveable price and the buyer was in NY, so I got in touch with him. He said he would use a thrid party money collector, which is what I wanted. He said he would use square trade (ligit company, I looked it up) BUT then he said he would only accept a western union money order. Researching further I found that people were able to use square trade logo, receive a money order at a fake location and you get no car. I didn't get ripped off, I figured out it was a scam first - but square trade scam is all over cars.com

Heather, your experience unfortunately is not uncommon -- that's a scam that has been ongoing in various ways for quite a while. With the advent of the internet, it becomes more of an issue. That said, I've bought many things via ebay, including a car -- I highly recommend www.ebaymotors.com ! BUT as always, buyer beware. I've also found that the "auction mania" can sometimes drive prices higher than a local dealer. Pete
