I kind of doubt that the Unitarian Church or the Ethical Culture Society are what Karlee is looking for; neither are, strictly speaking, Christian churches, certainly not in the traditional sense. |

Unfortunately, I'm afraid that our communities are not home to churches with significant college outreach. Most of our college-age population are students at Seton Hall University, a Catholic institution. Of course, there are many non-Catholic students there, but I suspect that most of the students there who might be interested in church affiliation are Catholic. There are several universities in Eastern Morris County (in the Madison/Morristown area), though, so perhaps there may be something there. You might look for links via Fairleigh Dickinson University, Drew University or College of St. Elizabeth (although the latter is also Catholic.) In other directions, there are Montclair State University (in Montclair, duh!) and Kean University in Elizabeth, which also might be the source for referrals. Good luck and let us know what you find. |

If you're looking for something a bit different, try www.liquidchurch.com which meets in Basking Ridge. It meets at a Baptist church, but is itself non-denominational. |

I thought 'non-denominational' meant all or not one religion. My mistake. But, Christ Church is considered 'non-denominational.' At least is says it is on it's website.

I think that the bigger obstacle is "has a college group" but I hope I'm wrong. |

Non-denominational means a protestant church that isn't affiliated with a denomination such as Mehodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, etc.

Karlee, did you mean Christian or traditional or both? That's what amandacat thinks you meant, but it isn't as clear to me. You might like the Unitarian church or the Ethical Culture society, for all I know, but I can't tell.

There are lots of Christians among Unitarian Universalists but there are also Jews, atheists, Bhuddists, etc. Some Unitarian congregations are more decidedly Christian and will call (hire) a minister whose approach echoes that. Some people have decribed the Unitarian Church in Montclair to be like that, with Charles Ortman at the helm. Nice guy. The Unitarian Church in Summit is not especially Christian, learning from and celebrating as we do the philosophies and holidays of many different world religions and respecting the individual's search for meaning and truth. Karlee, I have visited The Life Church in West Orange (through invitation from a Maplewood neighbor) and I think it's what you are looking for. It's a Christian-based church with contemporary music and overall approach. The service I attended incorporated a short play. Very uplifting. I am African-American and liked the mix of people in the congregation. |

Cathy, I'm UU Montclair member and a big fan of Charlie Ortman -- as you said, nice guy. FWIW I'm not sure I'd characterize Charlie or the congregation as being particularly Christian, though; in fact, your description of the Summit church as "learning from and celebrating . . . many different world religions and . . . individual's search for meaning and truth" is an equally good description of the Montclair church as well. I've never been to the Summit church, though -- have been meaning to check it out actually, as we find the drive to Montclair to be quite a schlep! -- so maybe there are obvious differences between the two congreagations that I'm missing. |
