We got our lab (and we think we got a pretty good one) from Canal Labradors (508-833-5217) in Plymouth, MA. They are pretty far away-near Cape Cod-but they are a small operation that really cares about their dogs.
As you're looking, I think a good rule of thumb is if the breeder doesn't ask as many questions about your family and living situation as you do about their dogs you probably want to look elsewhere. Our breeder actually tried to talk us out of a pup since we were living in an apt at the time, but when we discussed how we planned to take care of the pup, they did their best to give us a more relaxed pup. |

I got my beautiful, smart, wonderful Golden Retriever from Susan Taylor at Okechobee Breeders in Hampton, NJ (near PA border). There are at least two other of her dogs in our town, and I recognize her breeding as soon as I see them.
That said, she is highly particular regarding with whom she places her dogs. I had to beg and plead to convince her that we would provide the proper home and training for my guy. But he has proven to be everything I ever could have wished for in a canine companion--smart, friendly, beautiful, sharp and alert, kind and loving.

Just a plug to check out www.petfinders.org where there are literally thousands of goldens and labs of every age waiting to be adopted.
I have 2 pugs, one from a breeder and one from a pug rescue I found on petfinder at 8 mos old. They are both great dogs.
