we need a pediatric pulmonologist for my one year old daughter. I did a search but the most recent post I found was from 2003. My pediatrician has recommended Dr. April Wazeka in Morristown. Has anyone had an experience with her or another pulmonologist that they would recommend? Thanks!

Dr. Bisberg is one of the finest pediatric pulmonologists there is (check out NY Magazine and New Jersey Monthly! She's been highly rated in both.)She is also one of the nicest people you've ever been lucky enough to meet. She's away from her office for the next few weeks, but she's worth waiting for if you can.

I didn't want to wait 6 weeks last fall to see Dr. Bisberg, so we saw Dr. Barry Cohen from the same center (Pediatric specialties in the Ambulatory Care center, across from Livingston Mall) 973 322 7600. His personality stikes me as a bit quirky, but he's been extremely patient and helpful with my child.

I have heard wondferful things about Dr. Nuttman in Summit. My girlfriend who happens to be a pediatric nurse practitioner uses him and always highly recommends him.
Good luck!

"Obituary:
Dr. Jacob Nutman, asthma specialist
Monday, January 23, 2006
BY MOLLY BLOOM
Star-Ledger Staff
Dr. Jacob Nutman survived a hacking, wheezing asthmatic childhood. As an adult, he saved thousands of children from the same fate.

Dr. Nutman, a pediatric pulmonologist, treated thousands of asthmatic children in his Summit practice over 15 years, teaching his patients and their parents how to manage the disorder.

Dr. Nutman wanted every child he treated to know they were not alone.

"He (a young patient) thought he was the only one in the world with asthma until he met Dr. Nutman," said Jeanne Horsey, a nurse practitioner in Dr. Nutman's office.

Dr. Nutman died on Jan. 8 in Israel after a long illness. He was 57.

Born in Warsaw, he moved to Israel with his family at age 3, said his wife, Suzanne Nutman. Dr. Nutman's grandparents died in the Holocaust, but his parents escaped to Russia, she said.

Dr. Nutman attended medical school in Israel before moving to the United States in the 1980s to work in the neonatal intensive care unit at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He later specialized in pediatric pulmonology, moving to Towaco in 1995.

"He was an extraordinary individual, friend and mentor, and he loved what he did," Horsey said. "Taking care of children with asthma was truly his life's mission."

In his practice and as an attending physician at Overlook Hospital in Summit, Dr. Nutman would crouch on his exam room floor to talk to his patients face-to-face if necessary.

"Working with kids, it was the best thing for him," said Suzanne Nutman. "They cared about him as much as he cared about them."

Dr. Nutman, a past president of the American Lung Association of New Jersey's Northern Region Advisory Board, was an advocate of providing community education programs for both children and adults with lung diseases. He volunteered at Camp Superkids, a sleep-away camp for children with asthma, encouraging his patients to go horseback riding and swimming, said Horsey.

"He never wanted a child to feel like they couldn't participate in any activity," she said. "He just wanted them to have fun."

Dr. Nutman, who kept boxes of Pokémon cards to give to his patients and wore ties decorated with M&M's candies and Disney characters, took the time to earn his patients' trust, Horsey said. "I've met one or two kids in my life that didn't love him," she said.

Their parents usually felt likewise. "Any (patient's) parent you talk to, they say, 'He saved my child more than once,'" Horsey said.

Though Dr. Nutman was beloved by children, he was also a highly educated man who spoke four languages -- English, Hebrew, Italian and Polish -- and loved the symphony and fine dining. "He always liked to learn new things," said Suzanne Nutman.

Hundreds of patients sent Dr. Nutman get-well cards after he fell ill in the spring. "You were the best doctor in the whole world," wrote a young patient named Gillian. He continued to work at his Summit practice into the fall.

"He wanted to be at work. He wanted to be with the children," Horsey said.

Dr. Nutman flew to Israel on Jan. 1 to spend his final days in the land where he grew up and where part of his family still lives, his wife said.

"He wanted to be buried next to his mother," Suzanne Nutman said.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Nutman is survived by sons Jonathan, Amir and Ori; daughter Mika; and a stepson, Stephen Powell.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Overlook Hospital auditorium, 99 Beauvoir Ave., Summit.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Lung Association of New Jersey's Camp Superkids, 1600 Route 22 East, Union, N.J. 07083 or www.alanewjersey.org/asthma_superkids.html."

Go in peace.

So sad to hear about Dr. Nutman's passing. He was a truly sweet person. When we were leaving after my son's first visit to him, he put his hand on the kid's shoulder and said "We're going to make you better," and you could just see the tension leaving the kid's body.

RIP
