Do they have a taxi stand? My dad would be arriving by Amtrak on Friday night, how do I get him to Maplewood Village?

Taxi stand right out front, the entrance by the ticket windows. Expect to pay around $35 plus tip.

There's a cab stand, there have always been cabs waiting every time I've needed one. I think it's about $35 to Maplewood.

Ok, now another option. I MapQuested it and it looks like an easy drive, is it? I am not a city or a highway driver, can I just take Springfield Ave the whole way (that's what it looks like)?

You can take Springfield Ave or South Orange Ave, but you'll be driving through pretty rough neighborhoods.

It's not a bad drive, then you can go right to the Ironbound for dinner!

I've driven it several times by myself in the evening - it's not bad at all. I take Springfield Ave all the way to MacArthur (I think) and then it's one turn left off that (just know in advance where you are turning because there are lots of one way streets around there). Springfield Ave (outside of Maplewood) is busy and well lit pretty much most of the way. I think South Orange Ave is skeevier.

Springfield is direct - it merges into Market Street at the courthouse, and then Market takes you across Broad Street to McCarter Highway/Route 21. You know you are at McCarter Highway because the intersection has a newer office building on your left, before crossing to the other side. Go one block, and then turn left in front of the station.

An easier/quicker way is to take 78 East, then 21 North up to Market Street, turn right and then left, and you're in front of the station.

What time Friday? Traffic in that area can be pretty hairy from 5:00 to 7:00.

Also, if he is on Amtrak, what if he just gets off at Penn Station in NYC, instead of Newark? The Amtrak trains that stop in Newark also stop in NYC. Then, he can just take another train to Maplewood.

He can also take the 31 (Maplewood bus) and get off at the corner of Baker Street and Valley Street and walk one block to Maplewood Village. Other 31 buses continue up South Orange Avenue in the direction of Livingston Mall and pass quite close to your house.

Yes Nohero, that is an option. Driving on highways scares me and hubby will be at work. I looked at Dad taking NJT from NYP but he'll make better time just sticking w/ Amtrak through to NWK.

Another thing, though he has commuted by train for over 40 years NYP confuses him. He's from Boston (now he lives in RI and Amtraks to BOS daily). I may just suggest he takes a taxi since they seem to be readily available at NWK. I don't think he'd like the idea of my mom driving down scary Springfield Ave.

I used to drive that way all the time in 1999 ( when Springfield was bad) it is an easy drive.
Springfield all the way down to the station and then make a left right next to the taxi's.

Just lock your doors :-)

I just did that route all of last week. There are a lot of lights, but otherwise, it's fairly normal NJ local traffic. Folks, stop trying to scare Algebra2 about the crime. She'll be fine.

Tom's right. It's about a 20 minute drive and you can pick him up right out in front. It's well lit and pretty safe.

I've done it all times of day or night. But driving around the block by Newark Penn in evening rush is a major PITA.

Your dad should tell the cab driver to stay local and take Springfield or SO Ave all the way. I've had arguments with limo drivers who insisted on getting onto 21 & then we sat in traffic. South Orange Ave & Springfield come together a few blocks from Broad street, so whichever is easiest to your house is what he should take.
