My 9-year old, rather unathletic daughter would like to try softball. Does anyone know if the Maplewood/South Orange softball for girls would be okay for her? She doesn't know how to catch a ball at this point. Obviously, I want something with little emphasis on competition.

The program is definitely appropriate for beginners as well as girls who have played before. I believe that they try to balance the teams with reasonably equal numbers of novices and experienced players, based on the "tryouts" that take place earlier in the spring. I haven't found it to be excessively competitive either. My daughters have both enjoyed it and gained good skills over several years of participation. Neither of them had played much at all prior to their first year in the program.

Bettina,

Thanks for reaching out to get more info! Your daughter would be very welcome to participant...softball isn't as daunting to jump into as some other sports may be. sac expressed it well...there are girls at a variety of skill levels, and one thing I have noticed -- if a girl is interested, she will show marked improvement by time the season is over. This registration cycle already, we are seeing a strong number of girls signing up who have never played softball before...at all grade levels. In your daughter's age bracket last year, there was a high level of satisfaction among the players, coaches and parents. The softball program has also been establishing relationships with the Seton Hall and Columbia H.S. programs as well as with other interested coaches and former players in the community. It seems the girls really enjoy those opportunities too. If you have any questions, you can PL me or email the softball program at msosoftball@comcast.net.

And thanks sac for doing your part in publicizing softball with your email help!

I'm intrigued... Is there a website to learn more in general? Like what is the minimum age? (I have a 6 1/2 yr. old) What is the time commitment? (We just signed the 5 y.o. brother up for Tball) It may be too much to add to her schedule, but it'd be nice to have the knowledge for future planning.

Thanks!

Pdg...the softball website is www.eteamz.com/msosoftball. Time commitment is basically one week night and Saturdays. The older girls start April 1, the younger girls April 22...programs are scheduled to end in early June, excluding make-up games. Registration coincides with baseball registration this weekend again at the Civic House in Maplewood and the Baird Center in South Orange, Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00PM..it also extends through February. Girls from both towns in kindergarten through eighth grade are eligible. Softball is done by grade, rather than age/date of birth. Last year, kindergarten was free-standing, then 1st and 2nd grade combined, 3rd through 5th and 6th through 8th...that may change somewhat this year based on registration numbers. There will be free pitching clinics the next two Saturdays with the Seton Hall head coach at the Maplewood Middle School gym from 430PM to 600PM for girls 3rd grade through 8th grade...we just ask that girls register (so we know what numbers to expect) and bring someone to catch them. Clinic registration can be by email (msosoftball@comcast.net) or by calling or dropping in at either Rec Department.

Feel free to PL me or stop by the registration this weekend where you can speak with someone from the program directly. We had a significant increase in participation last year over the previous year and hope for the same this year.
