sorry for the repost, i can't seem to find the thread in the archives...
awhile back i asked for recommendations on areas/towns in westcheter. my husband may be taking a job in wilton, ct, and we are looking for a nice town convenient to his job and to nyc. of course, i know nothing about the area. and we love maplewood and would like a place as similar as possible (i know there is no place else quite like it!)

anyway, thanks in advance for re-answering my question...

I highly recommend Katonah. It's in Northern Westchester about 25-30 minutes to Wilton.

I grew up in Katonah - lived there for about 15 years, and returned briefly to my parents house for a year or so in my early 20s.

Maplewood actually reminds me a lot of Katonah. It has a central town with shops. Not a lot of restaurants in the downtown area (there are two plus a diner and few coffee shops), but Katonah is nestled among a lot of other great towns - Bedford/Bedford Hills, Mt. Kisco, etc, so you end up with a huge selection of restaurants and stores in other towns that are a very short distance away. Katonah is technically a hamlet of Bedford.

When I grew up we lived in walking distance to town, which was great. I was one of those freakish kids who wasn't in a rush to get her driver's license because I could just walk everywhere.

The school system (Katonah-Lewisboro) has a good reputation. Kids from Katonah, Vista, South Salem, Waccabuc share the middle school/high school. There are different elementary schools in those areas though.

Katonah has houses from ones that are over a century old (some actually moved by horse-drawn carriage from where Katonah used to be located - yes they actually "moved" the town in the 1800s). Other homes are more modern. We first moved into a 1920s/30s craftsman style home then moved to a raised ranch (both only about a 5 minute walk from each other). So, you'll find a mix of old and new housing styles. You will also find that in different parts of the area, houses have varying amounts of property. Areas like South Salem and Vista tend to have a lot more property, but you're in the middle of nowhere - no central town.

Culturally, you are near Carmoor for outdoor concerts, it has a great Library, an art museum, and there is a direct train line into NYC (about 50 minute ride). Metro North is defintely more expensive than NJT, BTW. They have a Fireman's parade and carnival every year in June and a Halloween Parade and a few others - I know they have one on Memorial day as well.

Katonah was included in the same article as Maplewood in New York magazine as one of the top 10 affordable places to live in the metro area.

Here are some links. If you want more info, let me know!

Krista,

You might want to check out Westchester Magazine. I recall an article about 10 great towns a couple of years ago, but the previous issues aren't online.

Actually, I found an archive of most of the article sans photos:

Be sure to check out the outdated chart as well:
