We have been looking for a dining room set for a long time and are close to giving up, but now I have heard that ABC Carpet/Home in Manhattan sells dining room furniture and that they have an outlet in Hackensack. I haven't been to either store yet. Can anybody else tell me if the trip(s) will be worthwhile? We have already looked at Macys, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, and Restoration Hardware without finding anything we wanted to buy. We found a lovely table in a catalog in Richard Roberts, but the price is way too high. |

ABC is my ultimate favorite store. I LOVE it. But it is very expensive. The Hackensack store isn't an "outlet" and is not discounted from the NY store, even though it is called a "warehouse". The Hackinsack store is also signifcantly smaller and has much less inventory than the NY store. ABC has a true outlet in the Bronx. I haven't been yet, I might wet my pants with excitement. ABC has a wide range of dining room tables and chairs - all very expensive. Their products are either antiques or beautiful reproductions. THey also have a decent stock of modern and mod furniture. I would definitely check out ABC in the city, but if you find Richard Roberts expensive, ABC will probably be out of your price range as well. HOWEVER, I am periodically surprised by pieces at ABC that are priced competitively. Some are; most are not. LOVE ABC! Go to their website to get the vibe of the place. I don't think that they sell merchandice online though. |

Handygirl, the dining room set I looked at in a Richard Roberts catalog was more than $10,000. Is that the range that ABC is selling in? Maybe I should drive into the city (was planning to tomorrow anyway) and then head up to the Bronx instead of out to Hackensack. I imagine that, in any case, I might find other things for my home. |

Some of the sets at ABC will definitely be in that price range. Some may be less. You should find things for less at the outlet, at any rate. I would start in the city, just to get a feel for their inventory - and because the city store is so great. You'll want to go to the 3rd and 4th floors. Also, there are a lot of great furniture stores in the vicinity of ABC in NY. Happy hunting! Oh, a few other suggestons: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/dept.do?dept=RB111 Also, try <centuryfurniture.com> (one of my all time furniture manufacturers - but you'll have to find a showroom) If you like something at century PL me and I'll give you some info on how to get a good price on the century stuff. You can try Horchow - good stuff: http://www.horchow.com/store/catalog/catM5n.jhtml?itemId=cat000004&parentId=cat0 00002&masterId=cat000001 What style are you looking for? |

We are considering this table: http://www.stanleyfurniture.com/Browse.do?nav2=SDININTABL&nav3=SDINTABPED&sku=40 6-11-36&nav1=SDININGRO with these chairs: http://www.stanleyfurniture.com/Browse.do?nav2=SDININSEAT&nav3=SDINSEAWOO&sku=40 6-11-61&nav1=SDININGRO but I am also thinking that we might want a slightly less formal look (but still more formal than Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel). Thanks for the additional suggestions. |

Handy Girl - A couple of weeks ago someone posted the Room and Board link, and I clicked on it, loved it, and then promptly forgot where/when/how I came accross it. Been searching for it ever since. Thanks so much for posting it! Alison |

Paul - welcome, and did I mention that I LOVE ABC? Alison, you are welcome! Had I known, I would have posted it earlier Jab - beautiful table and chair set. The chairs are very unique. Handygirl, thanks for all the suggestions. I had fun looking at the websites and really liked a couple of the Horchow tables, but they are large round tables that would not fit in our room. I liked the first ebay table, but prefer wood backs for the chairs. I have to say, though, I like what you found on ebay more than what I found on ebay. Anyway, we will visit ABC tomorrow and will likely order the set I posted above if we do not find something else at ABC. Unless anybody have other recommendations for stores to visit... |

We went to Wesco on Route 10 and while they carried a number of things that were not in keeping with our taste, we found a lovely shaker-style set and have been very pleased. It's on Rt 10 West - in East Hanover, sort of near the Dick's/Home Depot/Costco area. |

jab - are you a member of Costco? Right now is the time when they fill the floor space that was previously filled with holiday items, with furniture. It stays until the spring, i think, when the summer/outdoor merchandise comes in. And they currently have a dining room set that reminded me of the first link you posted. Or at least the chairs (which you said you weren't considering.) If you're not a member, it might be worth it to at least walk in and say you're considering becoming a member, so that you can roam around and check it out. |

We've been to a couple of the ABC warehouse sales in Newark - I think they happen a couple times a year and we get these postcards in the mail about them. We've gotten some great pieces there - they don't deliver though, you have to take it with you. |

Any idea when the next ABC warehouse sale in NJ is? We went to one in Elizabeth (I think they were closing the warhouse) a couple of years ago, and the prices and selection were amazing. |

I've never been to the NJ sites, but I adore the ABC in the city. We got our living room set there on sale, and it wasn't too expensive at all. It was only slightly higher than comparable pieces sold at Pottery Barn, Resto, etc. We didn't go in there "on purpose," but on a trip into the city to see my brother-in-law we happened to be in the area and he wanted to look at something or other in the store. We saw our set and fell in love - and we'd been looking for many months without success. There are a lot of gorgeous high-end antiques, and you could spend hours there just wandering and thinking about who could afford all that. But there are also normal-better-quality-range options sold there, and on sale the prices aren't bad at all. |

I've been shopping the ABC Warehouse in the Bx for abt 7 yrs - IMHO, it's the first place to go for area rugs and hallway runners. The prices are heavily discounted, and the quality is great. Also, my experience is you can haggle the price, especially if you're buying more than one. We also had wall to wall carpeting installed in the city by them - total pro's. I still make the trip for linens and towels, got bedroom furniture, chairs, hassocks, etc.over the years. My brother recently bought a bedroom set and dining room table and chairs at the Bx ABC, and they delivered it to L.I. I tried the Hackensack outlet when we first moved here and it wasn't worth the trip. But the true mother lode of ABC Outlets is in Delray Beach. I spent 3 hrs there! (also squeezed in visiting my parents). At the airport going home, I had people coming up to me who recognized the bags, expressing grave disappointment about not knowing there was one. And tomorrow - I'm making a return visit!! (and visiting parents, too). |

Hi All, a big hello from ABC!!! I'm going to keep everyone posted of all the upcoming sales at ABC Hackensack. We are a perminant location by Teterboro Airport, sandwiched between ROUTE 46 and ROUTE 80 on Huyler Street. The location has been there for 3 1/2 years. Although we have regular ABC merchandise (priced the same as Manhattan) we also have special close-outs, clearance and overstock. We do however, have a WAREHOUSE sale in May and OCTOBER in Hackensack, that has taken place of ABC on the road in Elizabeth NJ and at the Armoury in Morristown. If anyone has any questions that I can answer please feel free to contact me either here or at the store and remember I'm trying to put together a promotional sale weekend for those of us that live in S.O. and Maplewood.... BIG SMILE, Paul Sarrubbo |

Well, we had a lot of fun visiting ABC yesterday (we also made it up to the Bronx), but the table I posted above is still the leading contender (I looked on the Costco website and visited Wesco in the past). The only problem now is that we are not positive that a 47" wide table will comfortably fit into our dining room. Our current table is about 41" and the room is plenty wide. The issue is that one side of the table will be against a fireplace with an 18" hearth and we're not sure if having 3" less to move a chair back will make a difference. We called Lauters (the store in PA through which we would order this furniture) and described the room, then agreed to visit them next weekend with pictures and measurements. I think we've been looking (on an off) for a dining room set for more than a year, so we're happy to have gotten this far. |

Before you buy brand new and expensive, check out Koch McErlain Furniture in Summit on Springfield. We were searching for DR chairs for well over 2 years (bought a Hickory Chair table from Richard Robts during one of the Hickory Chair 40% off sales). We found a set of 12 excellent quality DR chairs for less than $8. We only needed 12, but you can always use more chairs. Previously we were being told that we'd have to spend $1K - $2K PER CHAIR for nice quality chairs! I know KM also had DR tables, some with chairs, and they are always getting more. They have a store in Manhattan too - http://www.kmantiques.com We used Steve, who is a really nice guy. |
