Anyone know where I can purchase an Amex gift card? I would prefer the giftcard over the gift certificates. Thanks! |

CVS in West Orange carries a lot of different gift cards as does the Shoprite. |

Walgreens on Irvington Avenue (technically in Newark, although less than one mile from the center of South Orange) |

If it's specifically an Amex card you want, last time I got one you had to go to one of their offices in person. |

Short Hills Mall sells Amex gift cards (as well as Mall gift cards). You can buy them at the info desk in the center of the mall. If you're not set on Amex you can by Visa cards at Livingston Mall that can be used anywhere Visa is accepted. |

You can order them from the Amex website. It always aggravates me to buy them because they charge $2.95 fee per card. It's the only gift card with a fee that I know of. |

Wachovia Bank in the village sells the visa cards, and has the AmEx gift checks (I don't think they have the AmEx cards- but could be wrong) |

Jennifer Many places do not take Amex. You can get a Visa card from any Commerce Bank. There are several within a few miles of South Orange / Maplewood. I gave them to some of my nieces and nephews for Christmaas. |

Do any of these cards *NOT* charge inactivity fees or expire? I'm less worried about the upfront purchase fees since that is a onetime charge. Another aggravating thing is the fact that you cannot combine payment (split payment) with many of these cards - Amex is one of them. You either have to use the exact amount or something under the amount that is on the card. I have an Amex card with $.16 on it. Do you think I will ever use it to purchase $.16 worth of anything? The fees will eventually take care of getting rid of the card for me. Amex will reclaim it.

Kevin - if it annoys you that much (and it would me), I'd take the card to a friendly local merchant who is willing to sell you something (say a cup of coffee?) for .16 and pay extra for the bagel. BTW - does Amex take a cut of sales from the gift cards the way they do when you use the Amex charge card? |

Amex is ruthless to the business at large community. If your a small business their fee is the same as it is to say a Hilton. They make no adjustment for the little guy that's why so many of them refuse to take their cards. |
