Babycat broke my eyeglasses, so I'm in desperate need of a new pair. Anyone know how much a pair from Costco will set me back, including an eye exam? Do I need to make an appointment, or are the vision exams first come first served? Also, how long does it take to get the prescription filled? T.I.A.!!! |

Just got a brand new spankin' pair at Costco and I love them!! $110 total for lenses & frames; didn't need a new exam but that will run you $50. Only draw back; one week to make; they called me when they were ready. Don't know if you need an appt for the optometrist, I would call first. |

Costco is great and cheap but NOT fast. Never had a problem, even with my complex prescription, but in the mean while maybe some duct tape to hold your old frame together?? Babies do the craziest things |

If you need the glasses quickly, I would suggest Lens Crafters at Livingston Mall. They really do have them ready in about an hour. You can't beat the convenience but they are likely to be more expensive than Costco for the same perscription. It wouldn't hurt to call or drop by and ask how much glasses like yours would cost. Eye exams are available on the premises and required if your perscription is over one year old. |

If you can find one of those ever-present coupons for lenscrafters, it will be convenient AND not much more expensive. |

You can also get a AAA discount at Lenscrafters, and the Entertainment book has coupons too, ( I think) |

But those discounts at Lens Crafters are not cumulative; you get to choose one. |

Thanks, all. Of course, I just threw out a Lenscrafters coupon a week or so ago -- at that point I was in no rush for new glasses. Typical! My old glasses broke right at the bridge, they are duct taped now but they look so ridiculous they are definitely not for public consumption. |

Can you make do with or $10 pair of OTC glasses until new glasses are ready? I've been putting off getting real glasses for about 3 years now by using them. I have a (cheapskate) theory that at some point my middle-aged eyes will settle into some new standard and then I'll be happy or at least willing to get real glasses and sunglasses from Costco. Is my theory totally wacko? How overdone! The curse filter just bleeped my "5 dollar" shorthand in the first line. Sheesh. |

Alas, I don't think they make OTC glasses for the hoplessly nearsighted -- as far as I know that's more of a "reading glasses" kinda thing. Luckily I have contact lenses for when I'm out and about, but I much prefer (unbroke) glasses; I find them much more comfortable. |

Cathy; I subscribed to your theory and have used cheapo reading glasses for 8 years. However, I finally hit the "wall" and am going to fill the bifocal prescription this week (as I struggle not to acquire a permanent squint). I'm trying to keep with a Zen approach and accept aging gracefully and happily. At least I won't be looking for my reading glasses constantly, as I do now (remembering my own mother's perpetual glases search----- its deja vu all over again). Sigh. |

MJ, I know what you mean about the search, since I absolutely refuse to wear them around my neck on a chain! I keep one pair upstairs, one downstairs, one in my purse and one at school. (I go for the REALLY cheapo ones and have even managed to find sunglasses that work as well.) |

We have had good service at the Lenscrafters on Route 22 (eastbound, across from TGIF, probably in Springfield). The on-site optometrist, Dr. Buensuceso (sp!!), seems thorough, and the whole process from exam to finished glasses takes under 2 hours. You can often get an appointment with the optometrist for the same day you call. |
