Okay, so you can call your own order? Is that right? And otherwise, they write your name on the cup? I think I slowed down the system yesterday b/c I didn't know what to do (I don't go often). So how does it all work? |

I don't think so--seemed to be the regular system this past weekend (at least at the one in SO). Order from the person at the register, who instructs the barista. Sometimes they do ask your name, when they're especially busy (which is fine with me--I once walked off with some else's latte, and didn't notice till I got on the train). |

I think sometimes when the barista is ahead of the cashiers, they'll ask you if you're ordering a drink from the bar and you can tell them directly what you want so they can get started on it, but it's not the norm to call your own drink as far as I know. The only reason for the name on the cup is so that other people who ordered the same thing as you and are also standing around waiting for their drink don't get ahead of you and steal yours. |

It's new and it's at "rush hour." The counter people have t-shirts about it. the shirts say "call it. get it." or something like that. |

Zabars has Kona style beans. I can't say if they're close, since I don't drink Kona. But I do love Zabars coffee, and it's a steal at $5.98 a pound. I order it online. I really dislike eating establishments that have a system that I'm supposed to comprehend, so that includes Starbucks and most fast food places. And I don't understand buying liquid coffee. It's very expensive. I make good coffee at home, cheap.

If I could figure out how to make a Frappucino at home, I would do it in a second. |

Hire my 14 year old. She can frappe anything, even grape juice. It really can't be that hard. Use good ingredients, and learn the technique from the web. "Everything is on the web."

I'm suspicious of $5.98/lb Kona. Probably a blend. |

First of all, isn't true Kona coffee from Hawaii, where real estate is valuated at dollers per square inch? Zabars doesn't claim this is Kona coffee, it's Kona style coffee. Second of all, just because it's inexpensive doesn't mean it's bad. You're the second MOLer who assumed Zabars coffee can't be good (if that's what you're saying) merely because of the price. If you like espresso, I'll bring you a pound of beans, my gift. I have a few in my freezer.

I'm sure it is good, but I'm looking for 100% Kona (local rather than online sources preferred). And thanks for the espresso offer. If I have an espresso emergency, I'll know who to call. :-) |

Dave, try Peets: http://www.peets.com/site/search.asp?sid=0753E8746352161A950F77F64282268B They are well reputed, and their coffee is excellent. At $24.95/lb, this must be the real thing. I have to ask, how do you drink such precious stuff?

Bong Brothers in Kealakekua, HI. You can fly direct to the Big Island and rent a Jeep to take you to Kona, wherein Bong Bros is about 45 minutes heading in the direction where the bluff is on your right and the rest of the island on your left. Well worth your time. |

My sister and her guy just got back from Hawaii and even though I insisted they not get me Kona (just not my fave, at least what I have tried...but I didn't tell HIM that, I just said, "nah, I have tons of coffee, don't worry about us!") she told me HE did pick up a few pounds for us. I'll let you know how good it is from our superautomatic. |

Trader Joe (The one in Florham Park at least) has Kona beans. Way more expensive than regular coffee but the son-in-law swears by it. And it's obviously fair trade. |

I went to Berkeley andmet Al Peet a couple of times. Although he's long since passed (I'm sure), he trained a couple of coffee buyers/roasters along the way who moved to Seattle and you know the rest. |
