I was reminded recently to sometimes give the benefit of the doubt. I was on the train, wanted a middle seat, and this guy on his cell phone was "ignoring" my taps and my excuse mes. So I plopped myself down none too gently, and he got upset with me, as I did with him. I was bothered by the incident as I don't make a habit of fighting with fellow train riders, and this man seemed to be downright friendly towards the people on the other side of him. So mid-way through the trip I turned to him and said I didn't like how that went down, etc, and he was immediately apologetic in return. Couldn't have been a nicer guy, just a complete misunderstanding between us. I got off the train feeling really happy, rather than angry. |

Regarding Trattoria parking, the really stupid part is that, at that time of day, there are nearly always spaces in the bank lot which is just a few steps farther away since the bank is closed and it is a bit early for the theater crowd. |

Just back from seeing "Munich" - you know, taut & suspence-filled movie? Apparently there was an episode of Candid Camera being filmed & the joke was on me...there was the loudest older couple right behind us that talked in full voice throughout...apparently only I was bothered (Mr. Doula only bothered at the fact that I'm getting annoyed - he would prefer if I just ignored completely). I shushed once, glared once & then politely/quietly but firmly asked for quiet to no avail. Unbelievable. |

OK, I confess to parking "illegally" for take-out outside the Trattoria. I don't see the problem, really, I don't. I'm not blocking anyone from driving down the street, and I'm leaving "legitimate" parking spots available for people who are coming to the village to dine-in. Would you prefer that I occupy a space that you might otherwise like to park in for your two-hour meal? Who's being harmed, I don't get it. The right-of-way crimes, the illegal left-hand turn, the cutting-in-line, all have true victims. To me this is a victimless crime. But obviously many of you feel differently. I guess I better watch-out for citizen justice now that the word is out that you can go to the police station and issue a ticket. Then again, I have to admit that having lived in Maplewood Village for over four-years, I got so accustomed to having my own personal parking space that I now get highly frustrated at having to do battle there for spots. So, apologies in advance to those of you who are highly offended at my running into the Trattoria for take-out w/ the emergency blinkers running on the family minivan.

mwoodwalk - I have been blocked on several occasions by people parked there ... perhaps their vehicles are larger than yours or they just didn't park as close to the curb, but it was not a good situation. And, are you sure that trucks or other delivery vehicles (or, heaven forbid, fire engines) can actually get past you when you park there? There really is not enough space for parking on both sides of that street, even if you have "successfully" achieved it on occasion yourself. And, bottomline, it is still illegal, so why do you think that you're special and can ignore that fact? Sets a great example for the kids, doesn't it? (And what is the problem with parking in the bank lot or parallel parking just up the street and walking a few extra steps anyway?) |

mwoodwalk, There are actually REASONS why it's illegal to park at the trat's door. I have seen trucks and cars fail to pass through that street when cars are illegally parked there. Firetruck? No way it could get through. I also mentioned earlier it's harder and sometimes impossible to legally parallel park when one or more cars are illegally parked across the street. When I'm leaving the trat w/ my salad and dinners piled high on my pizza box to get to my LEGAL spot in the bank or on Maplewood Ave, it's hard to peek out between the illegally parked cars and know for sure I won't get hit by a car coming around the corner. Sure makes it harder for them to see me. And sac is right, mwood, you are not special. (at least not in this sense...I'm sure there are other special things about you. :-) Please rethink your sense of entitlement, and make it safer for me and my family to get our take-out.

Aaaah, the venom. It's so easy to get it flowing around here. I thought twice about posting, now I'll think three times the next go-'round. And no, I don't do it w/ my kids in the car--I fly solo on pickups--so its not setting any example for them whatsoever. I don't think I'm "entitled" to anything. I am indeed parking illegally, and am subject to the same fines and penalties as anyone else. Before the firetruck point was raised, I truly viewed this in the same category as driving faster than 55 on the highway. What I find disturbing is the self-righteousness (sp?) evident in these and similar threads. I'm sure that given the opportunity it would be easy to find ways each of you selectively chooses which rules and regulations to follow. In fact, Mickey, if my car is obtructing your view as you meander to the bank lot, then that means YOU are not crossing at a crosswalk, which is against the law and also sets a terrible example (at least in the minds of some, myself not included). That said, point well taken about the firetrucks, and for that reason alone I'll probably reconsider the next time, especially given the extremely high risk of a grease fire with all those open skillets in the Trattoria----and I'm sure my next time will be soon and will be the first of many take-out extavaganzas necessary after baby #3 arrives in a matter of weeks.

Is there a certain time that the bank permits parking for non-bank business in their lot? Maybe after the bank closes for the day? I've always avoided it after seeing all the signs for bank-only parking. |

Seriously? It seems everyone sees it as a municipal parking lot. The lot is much bigger than necessary for bank business when the bank is open, and clearly, the bank doesn't need it when it's closed. I bet they hang that sign out to assert their rights, should they ever need the assertion on the record.

I know I'm about to park illegally and don't want to be too rude to my fellow Inwood motorists. My solution is to park 1/2 of my yellow Hummer on the sidewalk and the other 1/2 on Inwood.(I try not to get too close to the outdoor diners) Once, my huge orange flashers helped to add some fun to a birthday party taking place at a table 2 feet from my rear bumber. If nothing else, I get to impress my kids with my off-road driving skills. |

mwalk, if you think there was venom in my post you are way too sensitive. I thought I was pretty ok about it. What did you expect after reading that the illegal parking bothered so many of us? That we would say, oh yes, go ahead, we're fine with it....??? If anyone, like yourself, wants to give me a hard time about crossing Innwood without a crosswalk, go ahead, I'll take my lumps. Just like you should take yours. |

sportsnut- The people who park in handicap at the Y (or anywhere for that matter) without the proper license plates or placard better hope I don't see them. I'll very innocently say '"Uh excuse me. Don't forget to put your placard on your mirror. The cops wrote me a ticket once when I forgot..." Most times the person will sheepishly say they didn't realize it was a handicap spot, then move their car. Sometimes though I'm told to mind my fing business or to go F myself. That's when I'll smile sweetly and flip open my cellphone and take a picture of the car in the spot. I can't tell you how many people hop in their car and move it.

I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who feels like us regarding illegal parking, etc. I live on the corner of a one-way street, and can't count how many cars ignore the one-way sign and zoom against the flow of traffic. Not wanting to make enemies of my neighbors, I have notified the police of this dangerous situation, and they have beefed up patrols. It's a miracle there has not been a serious accident, especially since school buses use my street. And those who drive the wrong way are certainly setting a bad example for their kids in the car and are putting their safety at risk. |

75% of New Jersey drivers need to learn how to navigate a 4-way stop sign, based on the number of times I hit the brakes at my *favorite* local intersection. JTA: Even worse are the people who use handicapped tags assigned to other people who use the same vehicle. |

Third and Academy: AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!! Sometimes, I just want to get out of my car and direct the traffic myself. Some people have a hard time determining the difference between YIELD and STOP |

Third and Academy is a deadly intersection. When they created a 4-way stop there, traffic on Academy previously had the right of way (though it may well have been Third, I really can't remember which it was). I can't tell you how many accidents occurred during the first years after the switch (I believe it happened in the mid-80's). What drives me crazy are the customers of NJ Pets (or whatever it is now) who will back out of the driveway and block traffic in a particularly ungracious show of entitlement. That traffic is so ugly around here now is a given; what happens with the addition of 500-600 residential units on Valley Street and elsewhere in South Orange? They will have cars, and even as pedestrians they're either a risk or at one. I think it's time some Maplewood brethren made their opinions known at South Orange Board of Trustees meetings. This is affecting you, and their plans will double the new residential units that were built in the last 5 years. Sorry to hijack the thread, pox on the rude woman in the ice cream store (I usually say something and then feel like the villain), be careful at 4-way stop signs and circles, and I bid you goodnight. |

No, an intersection here at school. Though I never take Academy, it's one of the worst streets in town. |
