I am reaching out to the people of MOL because you guys usually have suggestions for most problems. Here is my issue. I work for the American Cancer Society and I recently had someone reach out to me that is going to be undergoing cancer treatment (surgery, hospitilization and follow up treatment)and they need someone to foster their 2 cats and one 12 year old dog for the 6 weeks while she is undergoing treatment. The person is looking for a free service that would do something like this. I have reached out to several shelters and none of them offer anything like this and the one that does, Mt.Pleasant Animal Shelter, is full at the moment. I just can't beleive that there is not a need for a service like this and I would really love to be able to help this person. If anyone knows of someone or an organization that could help with something like this I would love to know. Thank you |

I assume you have called the JAC? Although it is on Long Island, North Shore Animal League may do this.. try them. |

Natb, I can't take any cats, but what kind of dog is it? Can you provide any details about the dog? If it's small and friendly with kids and other dogs I'd take it for 6 weeks. We're thinking about getting a second dog anyhow, it could be a good trial run for us. Post here or PL me. |

I have called JAC and they only take dogs from SO or Maplewood. Lydia The dog is a female shepard mix of some kind. She is about 40 lbs and 12 years old. The owner told me that she is ok with other dogs but not with a puppy. If you would be able to help let me know and I will get you the woman's contact info. I spoke with her today and she is really pretty desperate and I feel horrible since she is going through so much right now. Also the dog is up to date on all her shots (I know someone at the vet office she goes to). |

JTA-Tried them as well. They used to have a program that helped out people that were in situations just like this but for some reason they don't do it anymore. I have a call in to the person who used to coordinate it to see if she can point me in some direction. |

I assume you (or she) has checked with relatives, friends and neighbors? Is it possible for the cats to remain in the home and have someone come check on them, feed them, etc? Obviously, the dog would not do well on it's own for 6 weeks. But the cats might do O.K., particularly since there are two of them. |

My mom has kept her two cats during her treatment. We did, indeed, have to place the dog elsewhere. When she has been very sick and either in the hospital or in bed, someone has come by to feed the cats and scoop the box. If her concern is the litter box (rightly so), my mom's oncologist OKed her to clean it if she wears a dust mask, disposable gloves and scrubs her hands after. She's never gotten any litter-box associated infections (toxo, etc.). |

I agree the cats are not as much of a priority as the dog. She told me she really doesn't have anyone else that can help her out and she lives in Irvington so she said alot of people don't want to come to her house, once they hear where she lives. greenetree-when you had to place your mom's dog, where did you place it? |

My mom is in Ohio (which represents its own set of problems for my family) but the dog was easy. We actually found a farm to board him on & then placed him in a permanent home. We did have to pay, but she only charged us $5/day, which would be unheard of around here, I guess. I would be reluctant to board a dog for 6 weeks in a caged environment. The one thing that I've learned thru this experience is that animals get extremely stressed out by their human's illness. We've had to deal with the cats' stress health issues, too. So, not to put pressure on, but it really is in the dog's best interest to find a family to stay with.....Lydia.

Natb - PL me - I'm game if the dog and my dog get along. My dog is not a puppy, but he's small - about 15 pounds. If they like each other we'll be happy to be the foster family.

If it doesn't work out well with Lydia, contact me, and I'll see if I can get buy-in on the idea from my wife.
