wolfy, I'm sorry... I've never smoked and I can't answer your question. But FWIW, I think it's a noble and great thing to quit and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers (seriously, I will pray for your smoking cessation...I don't know who you are, but I'm pretty sure God does). Good luck and I hope MOL comes thru with some good ideas for you. |

I used to do hypnotherapy and did my dissertation on hypnosis. If you're highly susceptible, it can help. There's something called the Eye Roll Test which, supposedly, is a measure of hypnotizability. Have someone watch you as you do this: Upward gaze of the eyes, followed by the eye roll test. The subject is asked to look upward as far as possible while keeping the lids open. Then the subject is asked to close the eyelids, and the examiner sees how much sclera is showing between the iris and lower lid. People who are highly susceptible can continue to gaze upwards while they drop their eyelids. An observer will see mostly white. People who aren't susceptible drop their gaze back to normal as their eyelids close. If you can continue to gaze upwards as you close your eyelids you have a shot at being susceptible enough to benefit from hypnotherapy for smoking cessation. It still takes will power. I'd also do the patch and/or Zyban. Stack the deck in your favor. There's also an abundance of self-help from the American Lung Association. If you go to your primary care physician, he/she should be able to help you with all of these things...except the hypnotherapist. They're hard to come by...and don't believe anyone who tells you that anyone can be hypnotized. It's not true. Susceptibility is a bell-shaped curve. If you're on the extreme end, you're golden. The other 90% of the population can't really benefit much from it.

More than anything else, having a "quit buddy" has been shown to be effective in smoking cessation. |

Good luck! My father did hypnosis but the thing that really worked was smokers anonymous, because having quit buddies made all the difference.

I quit too..I used the patch and paxil. I heard accupuncture works well too. I sure miss smoking though, but I feel so much better. I'm now addicted to yoga and I've actually lost weight. Best of luck!

I quit smoking in 1975 with Smokenders. At the time they had local meetings, but I think now it is an on-line group. It is a nine week system whereby each week you change the habit (no lighters only matches, changing the hand you use, no smoking during TV watching etc) as well as smoking lower and lower nicotine cigarettes. I have not had a cigarette in all this time. Their credo is one cigarette equals one pack equals one carton. You can never ever have even one cigarette after you quit. Good Luck. |

Jeffl: that Eye Roll Test test sounds very circa 1850! My step grandma quit smoking in her 70's with hypnotherapy. She was very putt off by the cost, and figured she might as well make it work. I quit smoking. It was HARD. I was very ANGRY a lot of the time. (I wish I had been willing to try anti-depressants.) I got over it. If you drink alcohol, be careful.

Its been 6 wks.so far using the Nicoderm CQ patch and I can honestly say that I've had no urges and only a few fleeting thoughts.ie:after a meal, with a cup of coffee, etc. For me,what worked was talking it up to my freinds and family and setting a date that they were aware of.When the day came,I threw out my smokes, slapped on a patch, and have'nt looked back.I was up to 2.5 packs a day and smoked for 35 yrs.with a 2 yr.period that I quit, using Zyban, which I found gave me insomnia, not to mention a rotten disposition. This time,pc.of cake.I guess I was just ready to do it.Honestly,if I knew it was this easy,I would have quit a long time ago. |
