Believe it or not, I'm looking for a desk for the home office I've set up in my basement. I don't want to spend more than around $100 and don't need anything big or elaborate. Please keep the jokes to a minuimum, K? |

Is this karma, or is this ironic? What goes around comes around?

How's your son, Jay!? Check the Star Ledger on Thursdays for estate sale announcements. They are the best source for stuff like this. I got a really nice desk for $40 at an estate sale.

There are a lot of desks for sale in the classified area of MOL. Sometimes they don't sell quickly. Well I remember a few months ago, there was this desk that...........

One of my roommates once made a desk out of two black two-drawer metal file cabinets topped with a door (flat, of course). Once you stain the door, it makes a nice top, and the doorknob and lock holes are perfect for the wires to go through! I bought my small all-wood desk at Target. It is blond wood, mission-style, they still sell it new for around $100. It has a matching hutch and printer stand. |

Jay, This may not work for you, but... I mounted a 2x4 to the wall to act as a brace to prevent bowing, and used 3/4" plywood, cut to my demanding specifications, over two short filing cabinets. The desktop is secured to both the brace and the cabinets, and was finished with polyurethane. It worked for me. |

Jay, If you want the desk to be free-standing, Jennifer's door suggestion would be a better idea than the plywood. TomR |

Jay, I have a really nice old-ish ('50's) wooden teacher's desk. Sturdy as all get-out, attractive and simple. Stats: top: 30" X 50" height: 32" has two nice-sized wooden drawers with the original wooden pulls. The top unscrews from the legs so it can fit into a mini-van, definitely could be strapped to the top of a station wagon and driven slooowly home. PL me Lydia It's yours for $100 - cash and carry. |

http://www.maplewoodonline.com/classifiedads/zoom.php?qs1=29044047uacrus44 Maybe it is still available? I had a door desk when I was in school. The problem was with a hollow core door it wasn't very rigid. If you go that route I would suggest a solid core door, but they are much more expensive. |

Check www.freecycle.org It's a great site that allows people to get rid of stuff that they don't want but is still in good working condition. There are regional sites all over NJ. Great place... I've gotten and gotten rid of many things there. |
