when having a deck built or a house painted, do the companies that build/paint usually only take cash?

It can go either way...cash or check. Be more careful if they won't accept checks but it isn't always indicative of future problems.

ALWAYS hold 10-15 of the money back pending completion of the work.

And a tip re: the deck. Be sure to ask them to use non-rusting wood SCREWS! (I think they are called galvanized.) Early every summer, I have to go out to our stupid deck with a hammer and hammer down all the gosh darned NAILS that have popped up! (and every summer someone steps on one that was missed...)

Not sure, but they probably want cash for (a) tax (avoidance) reasons, (b) to pay people who don't have green cards, or (c) because they want to keep their workman's comp insurance to a minimum. The ladders and thus the insurance is VERY high for painters, I hear. Besides having to go to the bank, it will probably pose no problem for you, so long as you get a receipt asap.

If you are paying cash up front, make sure you have checked them out with the Better Business Bureau and know that they have been in business for a number of years. Lots of construction scams going down recently - as well as selling people's houses while they are away on vacation!

You might also copy the license number on their truck. It makes it easier for the sheriff to confiscate property if you win a court judgement.
